My name is Bill and I am here and available to answer and discuss any questions you may have about the listing.\r\nThis particular car is VERY rare: out of 2590 built, I\u2019ve only been able to verify with the Special Edition Registry, 5-6 of this configuration left known to exist with Numbers Matching, 400ci V8, 4 Speed, with Buckskin Custom Seats, accompanied with original Build Sheet.\r\n76 was the first year of the bandit series, as well as the first year of the Special Editions; Pontiac originally announced there would only be 2400 built (see attached Pontiac Sales Memo)\r\n 76 also marked the last year of the stylish Honeycomb wheels and single set of round headlights; and the Trans Am, to this day, is arguably the best Muscle Car of 1976.\r\nThe rarity of this car, in this condition, makes it a real gem. \r\nThis car has been beautifully re-conditioned and is a solid, super clean car inside and out. \r\nThe original motor has been re-built and practically everything under the hood is new \u2013 including hoses, lines, gaskets, reservoir\u2019s, battery, etc . nearly everything mechanical is new: brakes, rotors, exhaust system, gas tank, shocks, brake lines, etc. it\u2019s like having a brand new 49 year old car; yet it still has that old car smell (in a good way \u2013 if you know what I mean).\r\nThis car is exceptional and is at the high end of \u2018driver\u2019 category cars; it\u2019s as nice of a driver as you are going to find. I had a 76 with a 455 and 4 speed. It was maroon, had red and black recaro seats with a chrome roll bar inside. A buddy of mine pulled the motor and put a 72 455 HO motor with forged rods and pistons. The 72 had round port heads. He polished and ported the heads, put a custom ground high lift cam with roller rockers and nitrous on it. I could shift at 8,000 rpms. I won a lot of street races being able to shift at those high revs. If was a fun car. It didn't have a/c and I lived in Georgia at the time. I couldn't drive it in the summer time. I sold it to a mechanic. He broke the crank 3 weeks after buying it. He must have missed a shift. Lol. Better him than me. I think they\u2019re absolutely stunning and have always been intrigued by their history, which starts with John Schinella\u2019s inspiration coming from the black-and-gold scheme used on the 1972 John Player Special race car. As noted, the original \u201cshow car\u201d was based on a 1973 Trans Am, which was modified for the 1974 model year and is famous for its appearance in the Pontiac display at the 1974 Chicago Auto Show. The car was revised for 1976 and remains in that configuration today. I wrote much about in my second-gen book. \n\nI have gathered data on approximately 175 of the 1976 Special Edition Trans Ams. Here are some interesting facts from that info. Of the 175 cars, the vast majority were equipped with Black Custom interior. 19 of them were equipped with Buckskin interior\u201417 of which with Custom interior while just 2 are equipped with Standard interior. Additionally, 11 of the 175 are equipped with the 400 4-speed, and about 30% of those do NOT have A/C.\n\nOn an aside, having tracked 1976 Trans Ams since the 1990s, I can tell you that it\u2019s rare to see a 400 Auto without A/C, but lack of A/C was far more common with 400 4-speeds. I\u2019m not sure if consumers chose that combo (400 4-speed without A/C) with performance in mind\u2014particularly when considering the 455 4-speed was also available. \n\nWhen it comes to production timing, 1976 Special Edition Trans Am production began in late-March 1976. They were shipped from Norwood to Hurst\u2019s facility in Detroit where the Hurst Hatches were installed. It seems that all cars produced through early May 1976 were equipped with Hurst Hatches. We know that Pontiac engineering wasn\u2019t happy with Hurst\u2019s installation effort/design from a reliability perspective. They ordered that all Special Edition cars being produced be held in a storage lot until a suitable solution was found. \n\nI have found that some Special Edition cars were shipped during May, June, and early-July 1976 and virtually all were shipped immediately after assembly (without being held) without Hurst Hatches. They retained option code Y82, but were billed at $485 as opposed to the typical $935 package cost when equipped with Hurst Hatches. I\u2019m guessing that these were sold customer orders and NOT those slated for dealer inventory. \n\nThe majority of the Special Edition Trans Ams produced during the summer of 1976 were held until early-to-mid August 1976 at which point most were shipped without Hurst Hatches. Some cars did, however, receive Hurst Hatches. \n\nIn the case of this particular Special Edition Trans Am, it was produced in mid-June 1976 and wasn\u2019t shipped to the selling dealer until mid-August 1976. It clearly sat waiting for Hurst Hatch installation, but never received the roof treatment. The build sheet doesn\u2019t note \u201ccustomer order,\u201d so we can assume it was ordered for dealer inventory. I imagine that Pontiac sent some sort of communication to dealers with orders on bank for dealer stock asking if they wanted their S/E T/A equipped with solid roof (at a discount) or with Hurst Hatches. I\u2019m hoping to find such a document someday. \n\nI\u2019ve also been trying to find someone who actually placed a new ordered for a \u201976 Special Edition Trans Am to see if Pontiac gave the buyer an option on whether they wanted their waiting order to be equipped with or without Hurst Hatches. The search goes on! \n\nRegardless, when Pontiac decided to carryover the Y82 Special Edition package for the 1977 model year, it gave buyer the option of a hardtop (Y81) or with Hurst Hatches. By 1973, Federal noise regulations basically prohibited such a factory set-up. Essentially the sound from air rushing in plus escaping engine bay noises out the open flapper exceeded the decibles allowed by the new regs.\r\n\r\nUntil 1976, however, all Pontiac did was attach the formerly functional flapper to the scoop with a couple of rivets that were easily removed. Many owners simply removed the flapper and ran with the back of the shaker open all the time. Others went ahead and either sourced the '70-'72 pieces (or designed their own to make them functional.\r\n\r\nIn 1977, all shakers left the factory with the back end sealed shut - it eas a molded unit and there was no longer a separate flapper piece. But that didn't stop owners from hacking their shakers - to varying degress of asthetic success. Some simply drilled holes in the back, while others carefully cut out the back in either one or two pieces. The two-piece cut allowed a center \"post\" to remain in the back to both add support and style.\r\n\r\nThere are 3rd party outfits that offer retrofitting kits to make any 2nd Gen shaker functional.
