It must be tempered with the fact that the gaps were not great when it left the factory. Looking at photo #33, with the bonnet open you can see the exposed door hinges. There is a fair amount of play in the hinge plate...on the inside of the body, thus room to move the doors. You adjust the door front to back with the hinge side mounted to the body and adjust the door in and out with the hinge side attached to the doors. You can loosen all the bolts, use wooden shims, then tighten the bolts to great effect. The gaps are also adjusted with the body mounting bolts. Each body bolt has a thick fiber washer and a cut out metal washer. You can easily add or subtract metal washers from underneath just by loosening the nuts and putting a jack underneath the bodywork. It would take a few hours to do but its not impossible. Having restored more spitfires than I have digits...this one is very nicely done. I just have twin SU carbs, a free flowing exhaust off a GT6, and electronic ignition. It's great on the street and at autocrosses. It won it's class at VTR Nationals in 2016, and was 5th overall. The overdrive ratio is larger than the ratio of 3rd to 4th, but with a v8 it is not worth the split shift. That was mentioned just for technical accuracy. In practice it is used more as a 5 speed. Once you are over 20mph the overdrive can be switched by a button on the shifter or shifted automatically. Automatic operation is overdrive on between ~15mph and ~110mph and less than ~half throttle. This is over 20 years ago so I forget the exact numbers. And as memory returns, it may have been that the car would downshift from 2nd over to 2nd automatically, but after such a downshift it would not automatically upshift unless you manually shifted to 4th. I am going to place a bid here shortly, if I am the accepted bid at the end, would it be possible to arrange pick up of the car right after the first of the year, on say January 5th ?? I am out of my home town area in central CA on business and won't be back in town to make the trip up to collect until right after the 1st of the year.
