I am selling on behalf of 3rd owner. She has loved having this beautiful Lorinser equipped SL as a third vehicle, used in nice weather during her ownership. Priorities have changed, and after 30 years, it is time to pass it along to the next caretaker. Since being imported to the US shortly after new, the car has spent time in TX 1982-89, IL 1989-95, and MO 1995-2025. I do have some service history between 1989 and 2005 but due to a move, the balance of the more recent service history has been lost. The cosmetics are in great driver condition. There are some scratches & scrapes as to be expected with age & use, and one small area of rust at the edge of the left front fender. The rear bumper cover/valance and rear trunk spoiler are exhibiting some paint checking, and the front air dam has some cracks in the horizontal fins. Presumably when the Lorinser parts were installed, the grille, mirror covers, and wiper arms were also painted body color. They are exhibiting some chipping. There is a mark on the windshield, shown in the photos, that follows the arch of the wiper. Most noticeable on the driver\u2019s side. There is no hard top with this SL, just the soft top, which is in great shape. No accident damage during the current owners tenure, and see no evidence of any prior accident damage either.\r\nThe 16\u201d Lorinser wheels have failing clear coat in spots as shown in the photos, and the tires need to be replaced before any driving, so a great opportunity to refinish the wheels before installing the new tires of your choice. \r\n\r\nThe interior presents nicely, seats are comfortable, no odors, controls, gauges, windows and lights are all working. The climate control does work, and blows heat after the car warms up. The A/C has been converted to R134, but it\u2019s been too cold outside for me to verify if its working. A set of blue floor mats will be included with the sale. The radio is later Blaupunkt Colorado AM/FM cassette. Radio works, have not tried a cassette. The power antenna is not working.\r\n\r\nThe car starts right up, and idles nicely when cold. Once warm, the idle is high, which might indicate a vacuum leak. With the out of balance/flat spotted tires, I did not take the car over 50mph, but it accelerates and shifts through the gears smoothly. In the driving video, you can hear a knocking sound as the car gets over 45mph, which is probably related to the vibration from the tires. It seems to come from the column, but the steering wheel nor the column exhibit any play or looseness. The exhaust seems louder than it should be to me when driving, so there might be leak somewhere near the downpipes. After sitting, there two small oil spots from drips, but I did not attempt to track down their source. The almost 64,000 miles shown were accurate when the car was stored in 2020, and only about 200 miles have been added since. Unfortunately, the odometer is not working now, but the speedometer is working. The ABS light is illuminated, but I do not know anything about this system. Brakes stop the car with no problem, and good pedal feel.\r\nWith a little effort and TLC, someone will have a very beautiful and unique euro-market R107. Many suggest: OVP relay, idle speed motor, idle computer, etc. I fixed mine by placing a washer with hole in the outlet side of the idle speed motor. Change size of hole until you get the idle you want. They all have a story and I just like the idea of the grey market imports. Crazy times! This SL certainly has a story! The 80s blacked out cars are fun to see in dark colors. The all white ones are a bit much for my taste but the dark colors look kind of cool. Only almost irreversible aspect is the painted rear spoiler. Hard to find good originals and when you do they are expensive ($800+). Current reproductions out here are heavy pieces of Bondo soaked something. Other big question is if the original euro bumpers are under the Lorinser cow catcher front bumper and rear trim. The Lorinser kit has not aged as well as the AMG stuff has. Sometimes the original bumpers are under the caps so a few twists of the screw driver and the can butterfly exit the cocoon. The Lorinser wheels are worth money even in this condition. People really love them. Of course all that is nothing compared to the overall cosmetics and condition. I wouldn't call this a project but its close. From the drive video, know the copy writer was right that the tires are flat spotted! Brave driver considering the tires are apparently rotted as well. How come every car with a broken odometer broke 'recently'? Hummm... I just spent over $5K getting my own '83 500 running after purchasing it out of an extended hibernation. Whoever takes this one, will have some work ahead of them and the purchase price will just be the start. And for once, we can easily say it has not had the subframe crack fix done.... the main photo shows an unmodified subframe. This ideally would be taken care of when getting the car back on the road. While these pop up from time to time on BaT there is no debate on their appeal and how rare they are.\r\n\r\nI like this one for the fact it is at a no reserve, someone could make out like a bandit and get a great deal. \r\n\r\nI wouldn't call this a project but more of catch-up maintenance. Based on the design of the body kit, the original bumpers were removed during its installation, and were not with the car when the current owner acquired it. From the records, I can't make out if the 2nd owner had the kit installed in 1990, or just freshened up, but the Lorinser pieces were repainted at that time, as was the rear trunk spoiler.\r\nRegarding the odometer, the owner has been very honest and forthcoming about the condition of the vehicle under her ownership, and she remembers it working prior to going into storage, and I have no reason to believe otherwise.\r\nThanks for all the views and comments. It's such a late 80's snapshot of the tuner/accessory market at the time, I hope the next caretaker enjoys the unique look.
