Blocks were stamped, and the rest of the top-end such as heads/intake/carb/fuel system are all numbered and can be date checked. The transmission can be checked as well for the date, and the frame does have VIN readings on it as well. The diff is numbered, and can (for the C2s at least), tell you what ratio it had and if it was posi or not. You compare that to the build sheet (you can also check what options were and weren't compatible to determine if the combo was ever actually possible, such as l71 and l72 owners who claim factory AC, yet those cars were not made with factory AC), and you can use this to deduce the vehicle accordingly. Ofcourse, not everyone here is a specialist in Corvettes, but I'm certain we have a few fellow members who can bring this car down to its building blocks and spell it out for us all. \n\nThankfully, the owner has done this for us, and according to my knowledge, all his correctly stated. Everything I said can obviously still be manipulated with aftermarket stamping, but at that point, you can look at shims/mounts/rubbers, and determine approximately when the mods were done. If the engine mounts are new, and the owner claims it's an original non-restored car, you can begin to hesitate- as an example. \n\nMaybe someone can add more to what I've stated, but hopefully this helped clear up a little bit. For the last 47 years I owned a close brother to this car, a 1960, built 27th from the end and a 250HP FI car. I stumbled onto it on the front row of a car lot when I was 19 years old in 1969. Looked at it for 1 hour and wrote a deposit check. Just lost it in an ugly divorce a month ago. I was already pretty familiar with live axle Corvettes already owning a 1956 at the time, so I knew my 250 HP was a pretty rare car. It was 100% correct when I bought it. Unfortunately, I lost the original engine.\r\nSo, the restamped engine and talk about matching numbers in this one caught my attention.\r\nChassis (VIN) numbers ARE stamped on the block pad and this one is correctly stamped. You can make out the 103116. The VIN of the car is 10867S1 (apparently the GM model number for all 1961 Corvettes) 03116 The actual ordinal serial number.\r\nAlso, F1117CS decoding to Flint, November 17, CS being the code for the FI with HiLift cam, that is 315 HP. Further, every cast part has a casting date code, an most would be within a few weeks prior to the November 17, 1960 assembly date. \r\nMy temporary replacement engine (1957 283hp spec) with 10.5 to 1 pistons ran okay on ethanol premium and had more power than I remember the original did in 1969. \r\nI agree about the brakes. These would stop ONLY ONE TIME from high speed, then needed cool of time. \r\nBeautiful job. The only thing I would change is black wall (radial) tires. Maybe RPO wheels and dog dish hubcaps. \r\nIt is a little strange driving a car you can reach over the door and touch the rear tire! Kind of a RACING TRUCK. \r\nWe did cover 115 miles in one hour crossing Nevada in June of 1969 in ours. \r\n$72k was a good deal for the buyer. \r\nVery nice car.
