Thanks for checking out my e38. Here's its backstory: I stumbled across this car local to me from a friend who is also a BMW enthusiast. On a whim we decided to take a look at the car and I purchased it on the spot. I had one of two intentions for the car 1) to replace my 03 540 msport which has the same mileage but is a bit of a project to get to the condition of this car or 2) keep them both. When I brought the car home she immediately shot down #2. As for #1, as I drove the car a bit I realised the e39 and e38s are very different and I would miss the nimbleness of the e39, so I decided to put the 740i for sale.\r\n\r\nBackstory on the car is it was owned by the original owner from 1999 to 2016 (don't know why Carfax shows owners 1-2 as separate) and purchased new at a BMW dealer in Georgia. It spent time between the owners homes in Florida, Indiana and Massachusetts. When the owner passed away in 2016 he left the car to his brother-in-law who brought the car back to Indy The brother-in-law kept the car for about a year then sold it to a friend, an older gentleman who was selling because he rarely used it. Car was almost exclusively serviced by BMW dealers in the areas where the car was located. I have all receipts since new, including warranty work. \r\n\r\nCondition of the car is truly incredible. It's very clear the car spent all its life in the garage taken very good care of. Never driven in snow and rarely in the rain. All of the window gaskets, rubber trim around the doors and windows looks like brand new with the exception of the c-pillar trim which I have never seen perfect in any e38. Paint is like new, door jams were immaculate, engine bay was extremely clean. There are a couple of very small door dings on the passenger rear quarter panel, a scratch that looked to be touched up at some point on the lower passenger side bumper. Small chip in the windshield that appears to be filled. Wheels all have a small bit of curbing, but no pitting. It will need new rear tires soon.\r\n\r\nSame story for the interior. Sand is not a favorite color of mine but it looks great with Royal Red. Everything functions including sunroof, sunshades, nav, etc. There is very little wear on the seats and carpets. Wood trim is free of any cracks with the exception of one on a door panel. Front end has some paint chips but are consistent of the low mileage. The hazard light switch is pushed in but could easily be fixed.\r\n\r\nMechanically the car is sound. Engine is dry of leaks (gaskets were replaced), and very quiet. No cold start issues or vanos rattle. Transmission shifts are incredibly smooth with no slippage or any indication of trouble.\r\n\r\nI\u2019ll post some detail on the work that has been done, along with a video walkaround and some undercarriage pictures. It also has a higher stall torque converter. Not sure if the suspension was lower, but it was tuned to be stiffer. Also, don't forget the Vavona Italian wood! The 50mph vibration (it's currently pretty minor) is mapped back to warn bushings which are fluid filled. Some just replace the bushings but if it were me I would replace the whole arm. Sway bar links are fairly cheap and easy to replace but that most likely would fix the low speed clank which again is fairly difficult to hear. Struts and shocks of course are original and if I were to keep the car would upgrade to bilsteins.\n\nAll of this is common especially given the age and mileage of the car on the original suspension components. Other than at low speed on a bumpy road and driving in the 45-50mph range the car rides very smoothly and tracks great. I had a vibration too that a BMW independent tried to blame on ball joints or something in the front end. The other guy who couldn't balance it said the wheel was bent. Once done properly there was no vibration. Guy who did it right said it's not only where you place the weight circumference-wise but where it's placed inside the depth of the wheel (left to right). I used to drive these very cars when I worked for BMW N.A. In New Jersey. Loved taking them on those turnarounds they have up there. Car drove so flat and had great feel. Couldn't believe such a big car could feel that way.
