It is wise to not underestimate any course of action here:\n\nYou could use as a vintage racer. but you better check that the body and chassis is ok and that the mechanical bits can be made into a somewhat reliable package. pending on engine that is in the car, this is a not trivial effort. But likely more economical than the second choice.\n\nyou could bring back to as original as possible. Here, the key is to address the body, making sure this is the right engine for the car (And not a later one) and making sure you have all the little trim pieces for them or a way to remanufacture (Sorry, no spares out there for external or interior trim). It was owned by a friend in Redding California named Richard C**** and I was his chief (and only) wrench for 2 1/2 years.. I had a concours 750GT at the time and he asked me to help him as his mechanic, a job I did for food and lodging. As validation the spare Astech head has two missing valve guides and possibly my old telephone number on the box! It was originally built by a man in Reno Nevada to the approximate current specs. I managed to keep it running and present in EVERY practice and race during that time. I was at Thunder Hill and left for San Francisco on one afternoon. About an hour after I left it was rolled and there exist pictures of it being carried by a tow truck off the track in one of the Vintage race magazines suspended by a strap through the windows. I \"retired\" after that and seem to remember it had an 850 transmission installed later as the cause of the accident was oil from a split 600 transmission case. Engine was/is a Fiat Abarth Autobianchi A112 1050cc motor. This is evidenced by the spin on oil filter on the block. I don't know which vintage magazine captured the photo but the tow truck brought the car back to the pits with a wide strap run door to door and suspended the car like a stork carrying a baby picture. Body and paint damage was VERY minimal but my name emblazoned on the roof above the driver was erased! The car was VERY reliable and once set stayed that way. The most memorable race was at Sears Point where a shop in the bay area ran a black Mexican Roadrace Hudson Hornet. It would chase the Abarth down the straights looking about to swallow the little Fiat till it was again lost in the corners. One spare block is also. Transaxle in car is from an 850 Fiat. Major work done to A-arm points to allow wider 850 trans to replace 600 trans. Motor also had to go from CW to CCW (850) rotation. Spare Astech head has 2 valve guides with oversize holes. I couldn't find a shop willing to try and repair it. I think it's possible. Floor pan in rear lower area was rather rusted BUT work done to install 850 trans probably forced correction. Minor issue in restoration. As stated floor is from 600 so easy to install new floor pan with lots of labor and little $ if done by individual restorer rather than paid shop. Roll over repair was PROBABLY done by shop in Redding California that also was stable for a NASCAR team at the time. First or second race was during 1996 Buick sponsored race at Reno Nevada. I have the participant pass as \"crew chief and bottle washer\" from that event. My 750 GT was a trailer Queen exclusive to Concorso Italiano at that time. Basic paint theme and build was done by man in Reno prior to purchase by Richard C**** around 1995 or so. Photos and more info available to winner. This was a very stable and reliable car. Possibly only pics available at races as Richard lost house in Carr fire in NorCal. In a 2 1/2 year period it made EVERY practice session and grid under my care for Rick. Fiat parts can be substituted for the Abarth mechanicals. \r\n\r\nNumber matching example are few and far in between as the engines often grenaded and the fragile 750 Engine nes were thrown aside for a 903 or 1050 upgrade in power and reliability. Recent sales for pristine examples at Amelia and at a reputable classic broker sold for just north of 90k. It would cost that to put this car into the same condition but would never have have the number matching engine.\r\n\r\nThe astech heads are rare not because they came out of an exotic race shop but because there was really not a real demand and Paul Swenson at PBS had a well developed head that had the advantage of manynhour of dyno tuning. The PBS heads had several cam profiles available and Paul provided Weber jettingminfo that was spot on. I remember trailing him through a few corners and the car would spray oil when turning in one direction - I forget which way. I told the driver about it and he said they knew the car was losing oil but didn't know when or why. Later in the day he said that based on my input they thought that maybe the dipstick was coming part way out of its tube n the corners, so, they put a spring on it to hold it down. Problem solved. Fun times a Steamboat, but not as exciting as trying to get he attention of the Lotus Europa driver to let him know he was on fire. I did get a 'team' shirt from the Abarth guys, but they only had an L and I wear XL. With the big scorpion logo It's too nice to give away, and every few years I look at it and reminisce.
