Forces seller to either take a loss or not sell the car. If seller could get a Jerry Machneish cert then possibly it could bring fair coin for the seller. People question even authentic buildsheets now adays. Sad deal, $69k bid at Mecum (likey cost $80k or more to restore). Now on BAT and likely will not get over $50k or $60k--downward spiral. Amazing how poor of an investment original type collector cars have become. I think mostly it is all the critics always attacking them for not being pure enough. Cars restored to original or as close as they can be have a much different value in the eyes of a collector, provided the car is a desired collectable. Having built both original types and resto-mods for some 25 years the approach from the buyers are very different, mixing genres as in adding non-original upgrades or non factory versions of options dilutes the originality values according to the people I build for and sell to. I think it has more to do with the presentation and quality of the build that affects the end price. There are countless examples on BAT of that. I think not having a few videos of this car hurts and the aftermarket additions hurt the originality value more than you think. Jerry would probably not consider doing a certification on a car that has been modified so far from original or on a car that is somewhat of a garden variety. Resto mod buyers are not really happy with carbureted old technology but would appreciate the extra gear and upgraded A/C, so this car falls in the middle. Lastly, auctions such as Mecum and Barrett are some of the worst examples of car values. It is a very seat of the pants moment and I can promise that there are more regrettable sales and purchases made when fueled by emotions and alcohol both of which run extremely high at live auctions. The published end price includes their 10% buyers fee which pumps up the price even higher, in most cases. This car looks like a very nice build, good color combo and fun to drive. Chevrolet just didn't want to rebrand their very successful \"SS 396\" marque and lose all the marketing benefits associated with the name, so in Chevelle SS's they continued to call the 402 a \"396\". I guess no one had a right to complain since you were actually getting more than you were being told you were getting!\r\n\r\nNotably you could get the exact same size engine (with a different cam and carb) in a non-SS Malibu in 70-72. But that engine was called a \"400\" and the cars were badged as \"Malibu 400\". Which created much confusion since there was also a 400 cu.in. small block available in other Chevrolet vehicles at the same time.
