My dad's boss, Bob Tomlinson and his wife are over for dinner with my parents. He just bought the carbon copy of this car complete with the 454 big block. I was showing it off to the the neighborhood guys, Larry and Mike Lawson to name two and I (don't know what possessed me to do it) reached thru the open cockpit and flipped the headlight toggle to pop up the lights. Not only did they pop up, they were on. I could not get them to drop back down and the SOB's stayed on!!\n\nEveryone scrammed. About 2 hours later and they were about to leave and..........................Battery is dead. Of course the headlights were still up and dimly on. Bob, his wife and my parents knew I was involved somehow, but no big production was made (story would not have been the same had Tomlinsons not been there).\n\nMy dad pulled his 76' Eldorado around, which He had just bought from Bob's dad, and jumped the Vette. That was my first viewing of a true high performance 454. Orange with chrome valve covers. Beautiful.\n\nBob was a good sport and of course he had to charge the battery up so he took me for a spin on a desolated road where the Alberstsons on Regal was about to be built. He essentially gave it a 1/4 mile pass at full throttle. The nose lifted up, rubber screeching and it felt like rocket thrusting forward on the verge of losing control.\n\nI was jelly. Not scared, just emotionally moved. I already loved cars. It is nice to have, but it only \"matters\" to a serious collector when you're talking about a rare Corvette. It was designed for the LS6 Corvette. The LS6 didn't happen in 1970 for the Corvette but it did happen in 1971, but it was rated at 425hp from 450hp due to a lower compression ratio. Pic 81 shows more paint in the gutter where the hood rests than the car had when new - that's what stands out to me as a repaint. And I say bravo. If the car had 10,000 miles, the repaint would hurt value as a target for the NCRS / Bloomington guys. The paint may be a big hit if you're just taking points.\nFor judging, if you \"just\" wanted a Top Flight you'd have to fix the small stuff and be sure all Operations points were at 100%, since they can kill you. Do that, fix the small stuff, and you're there.\n\nTo add, I tell everyone/anyone - just plan on a $5000 budget to fix the things on an older car (Corvette) that you think need to be replaced or improved.
