The original ignition-lock cylinder wore down and eventually failed in Feb 2021. I tried to start the car and could not move the key. This is apparently a known issue with R107s of certain vintages. After trying all available keys as well as graphite, I invested in having the ignition-lock cylinder replaced with original Mercedes parts. I did NOT change the locks on the doors or trunk; therefore the ignition starts with a different key than the locks. I hope this gives you the detail you need. There's no mention of the timing chain in any of the service records I have. The timing chain situation on mine was very similar to this car. Basically, unknown. Where it stood on single chain/versus double chain. Had it been serviced etc. My Merc mechanic said that he suspected it had been converted to double chain. He said \u201cMost have at this mileage.\u201d I decided to get the chains replaced (mine has more miles than this one). I figured that it was an insurance policy, and would probably be worth the cost in peace of mind. Once the mechanics got in there, it turned out that, at some point in the car\u2019s history, it had been converted to double chain. I still proceeded with the chains replacement. I suggest that the new owner get the car inspected during your first year of ownership, and decide how to proceed. My timing chain replacement was about $1600.\nI think these are beautiful cars, especially this one.
