I still have the original 997 engine and transmission for my 1963 Cooper (probably a 1962 build like this car) but there's a different 997 in the car at the moment. I've had mine for 55 years and it has always had a 997; three different engines that I rotate through it every 10 to 15 years. As others have commented, this car must not be messed with, especially an engine swap. It is mildly modified but the heart of the car is still there! Thankfully the usual bad-mouthing of the 997 hasn't occurred here, frequently done by folks that haven't driven a 997, especially one that isn't clapped out. This was the top of the heap before the 'S' arrived.\r\n\r\nFollowing up on some of the other comments, I'd also like to know what the transmission case number is. The commonly available lists of casing numbers don't include some of the early Cooper numbers - there were a variety of them. I guess I'll have to go out in the garage now and look at all the 997 Cooper casings I have: I don't remember the large round boss cast in the bottom.\r\n\r\nThe 997 engine never had the 12G295 cylinder head casting; that was only on the 998. The 997 had either a 12A185 or a 12G202. 997 heads had smaller intake valves than 998 and slightly different shaped combustion chambers and intake ports. The 202 head is rarer in my experience; I've only ever encountered one of them. Odds are good that this car has an original head as they were not prone to cracking or other catastrophic failures.\r\n\r\nThe original 997 front brakes required VERY high pedal effort and performance dropped off drastically if they weren't maintained properly. The biggest drawback to them is that everything on the road now stops so much better than 1960s cars did and the 997 brakes are marginal in modern cut and thrust mayhem. The easiest mod back in the day was to switch to 998 calipers that rovided better performance. I've never deemed it necessary to change out the original 997 brakes on my street Cooper, even in 50K miles of towing a Mini trailer. But if I was still daily driving it, I would do a Cooper S swap simply because of the idiots out there. @jdmcivic - Please teel me the original brakes were saved. All have the A-Type gears and a broad range of casting numbers. None have the large round boss cast in the bottom. All have the roughly two inch by two inch rectangle cast in the bottom. The outline of that rectangle can be seen in the bottom of the transmission case pictured here. Jumping to conclusions, the casting cores for this case were repaired or modified from a rectangle casting to a round casting. One of the oddities of early Coopers and 850s?\n\nNow I have to stand all those power units back up again.
