So as soon as the key is turned and the pumps run, the injectors oblige and spray (way excessive) fuel into the cylinders which leaks into the crankcase. Not at all uncommon for an early CIS 928 (or any Bosch CIS-equipped car) that has been sitting for a long time. That extensive $14K receipt reads like the folks that did the work know what they're doing - I like the bit about 'ethanol poisoning'. :) The car got the complete fuel system refresh from the pumps' wiring to the hoses to the WUR, FD and injectors. There were two cars produced with the last three digits being the same, which means you can't definitively say that \"0357\" was the 346th car built (subtracting 11). Many cars have a piece of masking tape under the passenger side dash with a number handwritten with a red marker, which is supposed to be the actual production number. And to go one more degree of meta, there isn't a lot of clarity on the workflow of how cars were built and accounted for during the production process. \r\n\r\nSpeculation: At some point early in the process cars were assigned a production number, which (I'm assuming) were where either a customer/dealer/distributor order with a particular set of options hit the factory, or some internal planning group at the factory said, ok, the next 50 or 100 cars will have these colors, these options, and will be shipped to these countries. At some point in the production, bare body shells got stamped with the production number before they got painted, and then the VIN tags got added after paint (again, this is an assumption).\r\n So what's the correlation between production number and VIN? Turns out it can vary a lot. If you just go by order of production number, Porsche was switching between ROW production and US production for the first 100 cars, builiding about 90 ROW cars and 10 US cars. Then there was a run of nearly 900 ROW cars with only roughly 50 US cars sprinkled in. So US car 9288200056 has a production number of 987 while Euro 9288100056 is # 47. \r\n\r\nAfter the first 1400 cars they seem to have settled down into blocks of 30 to 70 ROW cars and then 30 to 70 US cars, back and forth, always in contiguous blocks. Maybe suppliers were sending US vs. ROW bumper covers, or gauge clusters, or the engine plant was doing runs of US vs. Euro-spec motors in groups of 30-70? Or they finally had enough confirmed dealer orders by region to know how many cars could be grouped into a particular sized run of production number? No idea. \r\n\r\nAll _that_ said, this car 9288200357 is production number 1281746, which is in the range of the early narrow louver cars. And all geeking aside, this particular car is in amazing condition.
