The owner has a very particular eye having spent some time studying at Art Center and working in design for BMW in his past life. \r\n\r\nHe really wanted the engine bay to look clean, simple, with all the attention on the S54, which he always felt was one of BMWs best looking inline 6 engines. \r\n\r\nThe A/C system is mostly hidden in the trunk behind the bulk head and things like power steering and brake reservoirs are hidden inside the airbox with the associated lines tucked low and out of site. Although it looks simple, it was not an easy task at all. The net result was a fairly simple and clean engine bay.\r\n\r\nRegarding how this performs, that was another stickler for the owner and a lot of it's final performance characteristics were refined by Castro Motorsports. He wanted it to drive smooth and docile so he could use it as a part time daily driver while also being able to be driven fast in twisty backroads and stay composed. He took this car on several vintage rally/tours including the Targa California. These 1,000 mile trips have lots of back road driving on some bumpy pavement as well as longer freeway transit parts. It needed to do it all comfortably. He wanted it to perform as if the factory built it. He made a goal that whatever E9 he bought for this project, he had to drive it from wherever he found it. He bought this car from Bill Arnold's shop up in the bay area and drove it 500 miles back to Southern California. Bill worked on this car for decades and knew both of the prior owners. It was a very original and dry survivor.\n\nAlso, regarding driving, the redline is at 8k rpm and with all the power, there's really no need to get close to it. It also has the \"M\" mode still installed. By the window fuse switches under the steering column and to the right is an original toggle switch from the E9 that has been rewired to activate \"M\" mode. Hidden behind the vents in the center console is a green light that illuminates when that mode is activated.\n\nYou'll see at 1:26 of the driving video, I'm having a \"spirited\" acceleration test with the AMG Mercedes next to me. He was getting on it as well and this E9 easily pulled him with short shifting at 7k rpm and no \"M\" mode activated. \n\nI've chased down good drivers in Porsche 997s up on Angeles Crest with this car and they are shocked at how planted and quick it is. \n\nI've owned an E9 myself for several years that was mostly stock. If I knew this was an option, I would've gone this route. No accident damage. That's why the owner started with this car. It was stripped to bare metal and zero signs of any prior damage. It was incredibly dry and straight with all it's original metal. In fact, the floors are still original, which is rare for these cars.\r\n\r\nThe floor on the underside had some massaging by Jeff Tighe to make room for the dry cell battery that's fitted under the left rear passenger seat. He wanted it hidden and in the center of the car for better weight distribution. There's also a battery tender bib coming out under the hood for keeping it on a charger.\r\n\r\nFor those who know John Esposito in the Porsche paint world, he's the master at metal/body work as well as inspecting.\r\n\r\nRegarding the hood fitment, recently, the hood was off as the hood release cable was being replaced as well as for recent work on the upgraded A/C system. It still needs to be adjusted some more and we are waiting for new rubber mounts from BMW. The suspension is balanced and not too stiff, but stiff enough to put all the power to the ground without squirming rear control arms. It all works in symmetry.
