Known as a five-port head, there are three exhaust and two intake ports. They can be upgraded with BMC or aftermarket cross flow heads, either a seven port (four intakes and three exhausts) or an eight port (four of each). But the five port works amazingly well. For folks new to Minis, it doesn't hurt to ask.\n\nThis is a nice Inni and a great way to get into Mini motoring. For my tastes they have every upgrade I would want over a UK Mini, with nothing else really needed. Wheels and tires are always to individual taste, and these look good. Having an 11 stud head and originally twin SUs I assume these had the higher compression of the UK S models. My experience is that the higher compression gives them better mid-range grunt and flexibility. The single SU is a common and useable swap, but that looks like an HIF carb and not an HS. The singles are easiest to setup and tune but with SU's in general once properly set up and adjusted, they seldom need further tweaking. The biggest problems I have seen with them are when those not familiar with their idiosyncrasies think they can 'improve' on them using techniques gleaned with other, more conventional carbs - apples and oranges, frankly. \r\n\r\nOtherwise, sorry but this Inno is far to nice and unmolested to subject being VTEC'd... That is best left to lower valued later cars or Clubman's (more room under the bonnet with the latter as well). Given the classic Mini's light weight, that much extra (VTEC) HP in a FWD street driven car is really quite pointless, unless all you seek are bragging rights. To be able to put it to the ground, you'd have to go with 12\" or 13\" wheels which would also mean using flares which ruin the cars lines and classic look.. I have a Mk2 and can get more HP than I'd ever realistically want or need using an A-series. Throttle shaft wear can make them difficult to tune but that's easy enough to fix. (I also have a GM car with a higher flow rated carb that went NLA three years after it was built, and I've had the throttle shafts on that one re-bushed twice in 220K miles - it's not just an SU issue.) Beyond that the SUs need little attention when properly set up, either singles, twins or triples. What makes them unconventional is that the vast majority of carburetors are constant-venturi variable-vacuum while the SU is variable-venturi constant-vacuum, and that requires a different approach to tuning.\r\n\r\nWith due respect to @Brian M, a frequent and respected poster here, maybe you should just buy the SVT, or whatever. Different strokes for different folks and all that, but I think the A-Series in a Mini is still a sound and workable design, both for the street and for racing. As far as improvements, add a fifth gear and an unleaded head, and I wish we could give the small bore motors bigger main bearings like the later 1098 Sprites. I run small bores more than big bores (much smoother engines) and center main bearing life is usually the trigger for a rebuild. He wanted all the Innocenti parts taken of and to convert it to a UK spec looking car my friend refused to do the job for him. These cars are so respected and rare in the Mini community and deserve to be kept as original as possible imo.\nRegarding a Vtec swap with a B series 180 plus HP unless you are going AWD with a CRV drive train you need to put the engine in the rear to get the power to the pavement. Realistically a D series single cam 130 or so HP and a 5 speed and are cheap as chips which can be used with stock suspension, brakes and even 10's is the way to go.\nThere is a reason these Honda transplants and uncompleted projects get sold on quickly just because they have a Honda drive train they do not drive like one, the few that are done correctly with lots of $$$$'s thrown at the build do seem keep them.\n@SM Mini's.
