They used them among other things to lay water hoses in rough terrain if no immediate water supply was nearby. \r\n\r\nOn one occasion the station's chief mechanic and firefighter himself, who often looked after me when my mom had to run an errand, had taken me for a ride in the hose tender Unimog to a local automotive supply store to pick up parts. The Unimog and Land Rovers were the smallest vehichles in the fleet and thus used for those small errands, - remember this was a 1960's small town where life was more pragmatic with no concerns about seat belts and kids should be in the back seat...! While there an alarm came in and they needed the Unimog dispatched immediately to a farm fire in the country side. There was no time to return to the station, so here we were with horns and lights blasting through my local town, me hoping that someone I knew would see just me. Once on the scene of the fire, I had been trained by my dad what to do (basically get the h... as far out of the way as possible and always keep an eye on wind direction). There I saw the sheer power of these vehicles in operation as they attached a huge hose reel to the back, connected one end to a pump engine truck on site, and then just took the most direct route to a lake, crossing over and through ditches, slamming through wooden fences into a soft muddy field, drove through it as if it was a regular road, aiming in a straight line for the water, and 10 minutes later they were operational, versus probably using an hour and miles of hoses to connect to the same water supply via the roads. Brilliant! \r\n\r\nIn my adult lift I have survived and escaped several dinner conversations, explaining to my wife why I forgot to tell her about yet another classic car buy, but I am afraid I would not get away with this one without severe scratches and a possible stop at the ER. I mean how do you explain that you simply need to/must have one of these and its 8 reverse gears in your flat, urban Texan driveway considering the nearest higher than 100 ft elevation is 200 miles away? \r\n\r\nI remain envy on whoever ends up with this terrific machine, just hoping it will be used and get some mud on its fenders, releasing its incredible power and climbing abilities (once you have figured out which gear lever to use and how to drive it that is!) .
