The only Mk1 that I ever saw was one in West LA/Culver City, that I could have bought for about $4000, that I didn't have at the time. I was driving a new Alfa at the time, and that took $4000/T&L out the door from Zipper... It may have actually been owned by James Garner. I remember that it was black, and a bit on the rough side. \r\n\r\nI still would love to own a V8 '60s sport racer/ASR/CanAm, but the Cooper Fords and Lotus 19 Chevys are all gone, or priced about like my home, and I have a nice home. \r\n\r\nMost of these old sport racers have been extensively rebuilt, with fresh chassis, suspension arms and uprights. Most have had the data plate jacked up, and a new chassis rolled under. The picture of the car flying would make me wonder as to how much of the original car is there, as usually, these machines don't do well when they land with a very short suspension travel. \r\n\r\nThat said, a period replacement chassis may have been available from the manufacturer, so it would still be \"original\". Even if the chassis had been replaced 50 years ago, it would still be original. If one has the welding jig, anything is possible. If the car still has its original architecture, it is what the seller says it is. These cars were run hard, and maintained on an as needed basis. If the chassis was cracked, or crooked, replacement tubes were welded in place, or the chassis replaced by a specialist and the car returned to the track. Seriously, the only way you might find an \"all original\" car is to find one that had a very limited schedule, with no impacts of any sort, or went directly into a collection, which was simply not done back in '66. \r\n\r\nCould this car be original? Maybe, but the flying McLaren picture makes me wonder. What was done to it after? You know... Maintenance. \r\n\r\nFinal word on this subject. The older the maintenance or chassis replacement, the closer it is to being \"original\". If there was a new chassis, built on the original jigs ,by the same company, then I have no problem with \"original\". \r\nAnd if the chassis was accurate, and replaced yesterday, I still would not have a problem... It's still a McLaren 1B... \r\n\r\nAs it is, the car is very far away from California, but, you know, I can still dream of owning a racer that I might have seen race in '64, when I first went to Riverside with my Uncle in his Sunbeam Alpine and watched Dave McDonald in a \"King Cobra\" Cooper Ford win, with Penske's special, the ex F1 car that was made into a sports racer, then into the first Mclaren Mk1, finish second. \r\n\r\nThese are beautiful cars, simple in design, with simple systems. They are also frightenly fast, (0~60 in about 4 seconds flat, but 100 arriving about 2.5 seconds later) and not much on safety, with the driver surrounded by fuel.
