Our next door neighbors were an elderly couple, probably in their mid-80's. They had a black -57 PV444. Every single day, the man would walk down to the parking lot to start the PV, check things over and then shut it off and walk back in again. If it was during the winter - which up in Northern Sweden could last from late September until early May - he would brush the snow off from the car with a coarse broom, then back it out on the street and sweep his parking spot free from any snow and then drive the car back in its spot again. \n\nIf they ever were to take a trip with the car the man was following a full check-list - lights, turn signals, wipers... He even has a specially made rod in the car so that his wife could reach to press the brake pedal so he could check the brake lights. \n\nThey never once complained about our late nights, or the 80's music that we blared from the enormous Cerwin-Vega speakers that one of the guys had. My 444 is a mid/late '57 \"California Special.\" The four-speed transmission in mine appears to be from a '59-61 PV-544.\n\nAs jlandreth notes below, I was inspired to participate at PIB by Art Brow, the Godfather of my 1953 Singer 4AD roadster I ran at the 'Bay in 2011. Having owned a 1960 544 B16 six-volt car back in the '80s, I knew what I was getting into. Three guys raced 444s at PIB. First, Tom Payne of Ypsilanti Sports Cars in a red 1957 444 demonstrator. A JFK confidant, he was President of Michigan Young Democrats in 1960 and an accomplished racer. Lemon Law said free repair or replace during the first thirty days, so I got a free rebuild from the dealer's friend, a guy who built sprint cars for a living. That was one fine-running B16 . The driver's side floor carpet requires cut-outs for the pedals. There is surface oxidation on the surface of the driver's floor pan. In the center, there was one hole the diameter of a pencil eraser. I put a bolt through the hole with a black rubber gasket and securing nut - this is visible in the last feature photo, from underneath. No structural weakness. Long-term, I would prep the floor surface and coat with POR15. The B18 had five main bearings. The upside is that the B16 revs more quickly, the downside: not as high. \n\nFor touring and long distances, switching my car to a '62-65 544 rear end with a 4:10 final drive ratio would make the 444 much more pleasant on the highway. A bolt-in as well. For PIB, Waterford Hills, and Woodward Avenue...I am happy with the 4:55. A previous owner had attempted to convert it to 12v, and in that process managed to strip out huge amounts of wiring, not realizing that 6v wiring was more than adequate for 12v, since the amperage was half, and amperage is what determines wire size. It took me nearly a month to figure out the directional signal switch wiring, since the taillight uses the same filament for the brake lights and directional signals. The switch 'lifts' the filament from the brake circuit and connects it to the blinker circuit when you hit the directional lever.
