Agree with most of the concerns about vintage. Fenders, bumpers, lights front valence and hood are 1970 on. Would like to see stamped pan # and compare it to number on dash and if it is there the id plate on the nose. Dash pad is later style also as I remember. All those parts could be fitted to an earlier body but I would be concerned about about body switched onto an older pan. if you look at the owners manual you will see the correct turn signals, pointed bullets used only on 68 and 69 models, plus the hood trim and sloping nose. Car still looks nice though. Just my 2 cents worth, but lot of effort for a questionable result in putting a type 4 motor in there. They are great motors but unless properly set up can be costly to keep up. Should have just tried to keep it stock or close to stock. Worth more and easier to sell. Trouble with any resto mod/ rod is who is going to maintain and repair it outside of the original builder. Also always had trouble with those single carb conversions on buses. If temperature and humidity changes a lot then the single carb freezes up and fuel pours down the intake. They must not test older cars in California? Should have built it for duel carbs since the intrusion into the storage area was happening any way. Could be a fun thing for somebody with the right skills. Here's my take on the year of the car; The body is definitely not a 69 as many have pointed out. The pan however...very well could be. A very simple swap and suddenly your 1970 is a 1969. CA DMV goes by the VIN on the chassis or pan in the case of an air cooled VW. Just pop rivet the donor car's dash VIN plate on the body and the exchange is complete. Regarding the Type 4 engine, I almost did the same swap one of mine, they're a clean upgrade if done right. The missing ingredient on this one is the air intake boot from 411 or 412 wagon. Granted they're pretty rare but a similar boot and connector could and should be fabricated. It connects the stock cooling system so cooler air outside the engine compartment is utilized, making the engine much happier. There is no other cooling tin like on the Type 1 engine. And that single carb is no match for a dual Weber or Dell Orto set up. Better drivability, performance and mileage if properly tuned. I miss my 67 square deeply, but my latest wagon is a Hemi Magnum so I'm getting old and soft I guess.
