They drove the car all over Europe on their leaves. It kept popping out of third gear trying to climb the Alps, so they kept it in second, which overheated the engine. When they pulled over, the only people who stopped for them had Dutch license plates. \r\n\r\nMy father thought about buying out the other three G.I.s and bringing the Mercedes back home to Brooklyn, but the shipping costs were prohibitive. So, as their conscription periods were drawing to a close, the Mercedes was sold and passed along to the next group of G.I.s. \r\n\r\nI often wonder what would have happened had my father brought the Mercedes to the U.S. and hung onto it. For years, I was trying to find a local owner of a 170 who wouldn't mind swinging by my parents' house to let my Dad relive some of his memories. Sadly, I was unable to accomplish that before he passed away from cancer two years ago. \r\n\r\nI'd seriously consider bidding on this one, but the loss of income from the Covid pandemic pretty much has tied my hands. The V had an updraft carb, vertical louvers on the hood and was basically a re-hash of the pre-war 170-V line. I used to own a 38 and a 1950 170 and they were pretty much identical. Nice cars, not much on power but they rode very well. So the original owners of these Mercedes found a way around the law and got themselves some finely engineered enemy cars - \"used\". Seeing this beaut made me remember a great story my dad once told me.\r\n\r\nThe place is Palm Beach, FL and the year is 1964. My father was a small-time guitar player for the local clubs and had scraped together $700, a respectable amount of dough for the time. When he was on his way home from school one day, he saw a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 170V two-door sedan for sale at a local used car lot. It was up on one of those rotating pedestals, so the dealer knew he had something special on his hands, but had it priced for only $700.\r\n\r\nMy father raced home, retrieved his wad of cash, and bought the thing on the spot. It was in immaculate shape, trimmed in battleship grey paint with black accents and a burgundy interior. He loved driving that 170V and thought he was the coolest guy in all of Palm Beach.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, that lasted all of three weeks. His mean-spirited father sold it out from under him while he was away because it was \u201ctoo nice for him\u201d. After his mother caught wind of this, she forced him to go out and buy another Mercedes for my dad. This one, however, was awful. A 1958 300D that was heavily abused and painted a hideous shade of brown. We documented this trip on 5 rolls of super 8 film which I had edited and still have today. I sold this car and bought a 1952 220 convertible which I brought home to Colorado and this led to a parade of 37 classic Mercedes I have owned over the years. Presently I still own a 1967 250SL.
