At one time, I thought it was the result of having too strict engineering constraints on the designers, but now I think the approach was intentional. In 1976, the T-Bird was at the peak of of the bigger-is-better era. It had evolved into a full blown luxury car that shared a platform with the Lincoln Mark IV. It's size and 460 CID V-8 were a hard sell in the fuel crisis era. The '77-'79 T-Bird moved to the mid-size Torino/LTD II chassis. It was the right car for the time and sold very well. The long hood and basket handle styling stood out among other mid-size luxocoupes with 1978 being the best year ever for Thunderbird sales. Unfortunately, the 1980 move to the FOX platform was a bridge to far. Sales plummeted as the buying public saw the new Bird as a deluxe Fairmont. Budget cutting by Ford didn't help as the interior was pure Fairmont right down to the window cranks. At least this example is optioned with the very rare bucket seats, but Ford still didn't bother to offer a floor shift. Buyers stayed away in droves and the Thunderbird nameplate nearly died. Fortunately, Don Petersen and Jack Telnack had other plans and by 1983, the very successful aerobird was released and included the excellent Turbo Coupe available with a five-speed manual. Bill Elliott drove that generation into the history books. Quite a remarkable ride of four totally different Thunderbirds in a span of only seven years - the typical lifespan of one model today! To prove that this was something the Ford designers thought looked good, check out the '80 Mercury Cougar, where they differentiated the T-bird's side view by taking away even more glass area. Unbelievably, they added three louvers to the already tiny rear quarter windows to make the remaining opening on the Cougar look like a sliver of cheese. \n\nI complained about the cheese sliver quarter windows on '79-86 Mustang 3-door to whoever would listen. Most people would roll their eyes at me until Ford introduced the facelifted '87 Mustang. Finally, they fixed the wrongs of the too-small quarter windows by covering the louvered areas with glass, and I was proven right. I thought the Mustang notchback and Fairmont Wagon, with their airy cabins, were very attractive cars. I liked the Fairmont 2-door and 4-door sedans too, which had plenty of glass area. I don\u2019t think I would change a thing but to remove the stereo tack on box so I would have room for my right kneecap under the dash. Granted, it looks like a tarted-up Fairmont for the most obvious of reasons. But as a symbol of its times, there are few domestics that can compare to this.\r\n\r\nI actually owned one of these for about 6 weeks, back in 1999. My 1991 2.5L Chevy S-10 had decided that it was pretty much finished taking abuse from me (e.g., towing full 6X12 U-Haul trailers back and forth between Memphis, TN and FL), and that it was no longer going to work perfectly for anyone but my mechanic. As a stopgap measure, I contacted a car buddy of mine along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He happened to have a 1980 T-Bird that he was willing to part with for $500 if I was willing to come get it and drive it up to Memphis. He had obtained it off a coworker who I believe, while reluctant to part with his sole form of transportation, recognized the wisdom of securing bail money ahead of tenuous car ownership.\r\n\r\nAnd tenuous was indeed this T-bird's claim to being a roadworthy automobile. It appeared that, through the succession of owners the vehicle had passed in the 19 years of its life, few if any of them had bothered with much beyond an oil change every 40,000 miles or so. It had left the factory painted brown, with a brown vinyl top. After two decades of subtropical sunshine, the brown had faded to something that resembled mud and the vinyl top had long ago left this ethereal plane for another existence, leaving the seams along the roof to fend for themselves. The seats had taken the lines of stitching across them as convenient perforations and all split to display the pale, slowly disintegrating foam underneath. It is not an exaggeration to say that there wasn't a fluid in that T-bird that it didn't leak onto the pavement, like an EPA Super Fund site gone mobile. Despite a thorough check of the entire system, brake fluid disappeared from the system as if the brake lines passed through another dimension somewhere between the master cylinder and the calipers. The steering rack leaked (try not to turn left too sharply). The engine oil found its way out of the pan at a rate that suggested the engine had been built without gaskets, piston rings, or valve stems (as further evidenced by the mosquito control cloud that followed it). The radiator, hoses, and so forth appeared to be in good shape, but one of the freeze plugs on the driver's side of the engine leaked like a sieve, leaving a lone trail of coolant down the side of the engine, which was the only place you could see that underneath that clot of oil and dirt, there was indeed something metallic motivating the vehicle. I actually ran it out of coolant halfway to Memphis when picking it up. To the 302's credit, it didn't seem to harm it any further, and once the radiator was topped off, it resumed its journey with unabated indifference. The rear transmission seal was perhaps the best, in that its leak would be considered \"seepage\" if the car happened to be from the 60's, in any way sporty, and British in origin. Every day, before starting to work, and again before starting for home, I opened the hood and the trunk and checked all the fluid levels, adding to them as needed from the collection of quart containers I carried. After about a month, I bought a '96 Jeep Cherokee 4.0l and laid the T-Bird to rest.\r\n\r\nEven in its condition, it was clear that the T-Bird had started off as a very nice car for its time. The engine started every time I asked nicely. The ride was better than any other Ford I've ridden in that was built on this chassis, and I've ridden in all of them. This is an exceptional time capsule, at the opposite end from the 'Bird I owned. I hope it goes to someone who will continue to cherish and maintain it exactly as it is. It's not too late for this one to have a much better fate.
