BAT called it metallic blue...I thought of it more as a pearlescent...very unusual for that era. Mine had navy blue carpeting on the transmission tunnel and because it was a 73 had full carpeting in the front and rear foot wells instead of the rubber mats - one of many small upgrades they added to the 510 just before discontinuing production. New carpeting would make this one even better. Then, one year later I got married, entered the Army, and traded my Z for a new 510 Station Wagon which I shipped to Europe and drove for 3 years without ever changing the spark plugs! The 510 still holds a special place for me although I have since moved on to cars with tires that cost more than my 510s did new. A concourses quality paint job for a Datsun 510 would cost between $10-$15K+ as the car is media-blasted, taken down to metal, all body panels removed. Done properly every bolt is removed and the body is placed on a dolly and transferred to a body shop. You would then get a perfect car back and constantly worry about every little possible chip or scratch in the paint. Call Troy Ermish and ask him on the numbers if you question them. He's done a number of restorations. \n\n2. The previous owner loved all classic cars and restored them for fun. He had a special place for 510s which is why he purchased this car from Florida. He had a number of friends in the bodywork field and so he used a couple of them to do the work on the side and over weekends. The entire car was block sanded and several panels were taken down to the metal with the rear panel requiring just a little more attention. Then a base plus clear coat was applied to the entire car and the under the table payment was $6K. Is there a receipt for that job? No. Does it present like a $6K paint job with all the labor included in that amount? Yes. \n\n3. The great thing (IMHO) about the paint quality is that it while is presents beautifuly it's not too perfect to drive and enjoy worryfree. It's not a 20-footer or a 10-footer more like a 1-footer. You have to get very close and on your hands and knees to notice the imperfections. Drive and enjoy for years and then maybe do a bolt-off paint job if you feel it necessary. \n\n4. Yes can order a Futofab rear tale panel for $255 but the labor to remove and weld in the panel would run you easily $1K+. Then the entire rear panel would not have original metal. The fiberglass patches under the tailights are very small (about 1\" wide) and can only be noticed if you have the rear lights out which I did to take them apart and polish the leneses. \n\n5. The runs are very minimal and are in inconspicuous places. The main panels included the hood, roof, doors, sides panels , rear, and truck lid don't have any runs. Again driver-level paint job that presents better than it sounds. \n\nHope that helps those bidding and considering bids. The little 510's really did set a new benchmark as far as a affordable car with all of the options that was actually easy to drive and reliable, not cause they could be made into racers. They were really just an underpowered copy of a BMW 2002 in any rational review, but at a cost that anybody could buy one. If it were not for Mr. K wanting the teams to go from racing roadsters to 510's and Z's and the publicity of BRE and Bob Sharp Racing and a few others (Later Electromotive, etc etc) they probably would have not taken off in racing circles like they did. That doesn't make an exactly the same or even better car worth $30K for example. It just means at least two people had to have this car. In other words the new market value for #2 510s is not $30K. To determine that we'd need a more efficient market and lots more data. This may signal an increase in prices across the board for nice cars but saying this is market is simply not true. This is a case of a few determined people with deep pockets who had to have this car whatever the outcome. Take for example the sale at Sotheby's of the fake Jule's Rimet trophy recently. The market for fake World Cup trophies is not approximately $250K now because FIFA and Brazil or whatever country had to have it. There were other forces at play and it just happened to sell for that price on that day. We may see an even better 510 fetch less next time. Every make of car and its year appeals to someone and the price is then governed by that person and other interested parties. Sometimes a car just has to be painted due to not being cared for during its life. In my case, my Honda has original paint except for the driver's door which was keyed back in 1972. I couldn't drive around for over 40 years with a scratched door. At the same time, an International judge at the Vancouver show, told me my car was worth more with the 'dirt' on the firewall behind the air cleaner than it would be if I the pulled the engine etc. and steam cleaned it and painted it again to look artificially new.\r\n\r\nPaperwork is valuable and I have a log book in my car with every gas fillup and every service. All receipts for the past 43 years have also been kept.
