This one is fanning the great memories of my first Volvo, a 1968 142 4-speed purchased when just out of grad school. Not the fastest car on the block but incredibly easy to drive, once the original bias-plies were traded for radials. The only problems it gave me was a frozen emergency brake cable (made it to work a little late that day!) and later, the glue holding the vent panes in place letting go. It took my wife Years to forgive me when I sold it to a colleague at work. Amazing thing about the construction was the door fit. You could park the doors right on the latch, give a little push and they would close right up. It always irritated me when people would slam the doors like most cars required. A \u201871 164 was the same way. Loved them both! BTW, the carbs appear to be original SU, not Stromberg, or is that what the \u201cS\u201d stands for? Wonderful, low mileage Volvo! There is a secondary set of throttle plates between the carbs and the cylinder head. The idea was to have the mixture drawn through the center part of the intake and back to the intake ports. The intake and exhaust manifold are one piece. In doing that, it preheats the mixture to supposedly help vaporize it. Terrible idea, especially on an automatic car. Unless you\u2019re burning hi-test the engine diesels after shut off. A stick you can dump the clutch to stall it. Volvo offered a thicker head gasket kit, but it made a slow car even slower. The purpose was to pass the latest emission standard. I have the SAE paper from Volvo on this design. My 1968 142S with SUs on the dual intake manifold worked perfectly for 160,000 miles. No issue with run on ever. The dual intake manifold gave a smooth increase in power with pedal position until the secondary plates open when there was a strong roar of real power. I liked to demonstrate this to those who thought my car slow! At about 70 MPH, the primary throttles were open nearly all the way. Pushing the pedal that last inch, opening the secondary plates all the way, took the car to 80 MPH with real thrust. No one who got this demo ever thought the car slow again. As far as spark plugs, the factory recommended Bosch 200T35\nThe A series engines had a different cam profile also, they made torque at lower speeds. Not very useful here in the US\nAnd they wore out quickly. The NGKs lasted much longer. As I mentioned earlier, setting the mix to CDs was not very accurate. The black plugs sound like it was too rich. Adjusting the jet used a press tool that screwed into the dash pot with a slotted anvil that slipped around the metering needle and put pressure on the jet, after it was pushed up from the float chamber with a different tool. The rears also have an inner drum for the parking brake. The Volvo 140 pioneered the use of the so-called triangular split braking system. Both systems actuate both front wheels and one rear. Theres a warning switch fitted to the brass manifold where the lines come together to inform the operator if one system is misbehaving. See picture #73, just in front of the brake booster and inboard of the brake fluid reservoir. In this case, it looks like the wire leading to the switch is disconnected and taped off.
