But as automobiles that are actually enjoyable to drive today, the adage applies in spades here: \u201cold stuff is old stuff.\u201d \r\n\r\nMy 1967 coupe was a mobile sauna in hot weather, and a vast number of modern low-priced cars accelerate faster, handle better, are vastly more comfortable and user friendly, and sad to say, simply more enjoyable to drive. \r\n\r\nXKE\u2019s represents post-WWII and 1950\u2019s British technology, which produced some magnificent LOOKING \u201cmotorcars\u201d. But with the vast technological changes and passage of time over the last half century, they simply drive like the old cars they are. And as anyone who has worked extensively on and restored vintage Jaguars, understanding British engineering of the era frequently raises the question \u201cWHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?!\u201d\r\n\r\nMy point here is I loved owning XKE\u2019s, spent hours in the garage just admiring their looks, and occasionally on a moderately warm day thoroughly enjoyed a Sunday afternoon drive in the countryside. It reminds me of what it was like back in the day. I don't expect any of my old Alfa's, Jag's, or MG's to drive like my Cayman S or even my wife's Stelvio. A case in point was years ago when on the track with my 67 GTV on the back straight of High Plains Raceway going like hell when a Mazdaspeed 3 zoomed passed me. Not to worry, we were both having a blast. Old cars take a lot of effort to drive. No power brakes or steering. And at least for me, no automatic transmission. But the connection to the road and the past is incomparable. My cars span 20 years through the 50's and 60's and each drives in its own way with its own character. I can literally drive through the most exiting time of automotive development on any sunny weekend.\r\n\r\nThe skills I have learned restoring and maintaining them connects me as well. Of course you should lubricate your 1948 MGY every 1000 miles. Of course you should learn about points and carb setup because if you drive them you will need the knowledge. 50 years of automotive development has given us cars that don't need oil changes but every 15,000 miles and plugs at 100,000. Fuel injection solved the vapor lock of old. Today, most cars look the same and they only come in 4 colors. They get you from A to B without any anxiety, but where's the love? Where is the visceral connection, Where is the carburetor rumble through the gas pedal on an old Alfa, Where is the thrill of entering the interstate in your E-Type and feeling that wonderful engine spool up the torque and send you down the road with a huge smile on not only your face, but everyone who see's you.............\r\n\r\nTo the buyer of this beauty, your past is in your future. It was actually reliable once I put the big radiator in it, and the pair of fans. It was ratty, and got pretty hot inside, but it was fast. \r\n\r\nThe '65 and later 3 carb cars had a one piece intake, which eliminated the coolant/steam pipes and balance tubes. This helped keep the tune, and my SUs required little attention. \r\nI used the E TYPE (yes, we called them E Types from the time that they were new, here in L.A. and everywhere else where there were actual owners) for daily transport for a while, then embarked on a long restoration. Engine, gearbox, rear subframe, bigger brakes, body refinishing. I didn't get it finished as I was offered a whole bunch of money for the nearly finished machine and a trade for an early Lotus 7. Before I let the E Type go, I bled the brakes and clutch, kicked out the jack stands and took it out on the road for a brief spin. Equipped with high compression and some Isky hillclimb cams, and about 14 lbs shaved off the flywheel, it was a rocket. \r\n\r\nI don't miss many of the cars that I let go, but I do miss that E Type, only because of what it would have been when it was fully finished. \r\n\r\nAs for the so called service problems, I have found that proper maintenance, upgrade (larger radiator, better fans), repair and a breakerless ignition solves a lot of problems and keeps the Jag running well. E Types have a lot of parts, and it is necessary to inspect and properly install every one of them to get a reliable machine. These cars don't suffer short cuts well. This car requires that you do everything right. An E Type requires more service than modern cars, just as everything else did back then. 1500 mile oil changes, twice a year wheel bearing repacking, tune ups (points, plugs, timing, carb synchronization) are not things that we think of with any modern car from any manufacturer. \r\n\r\nComparisons to anything new is silly. When it comes to day to day use, any modern car is better as far as comfort, reliability and ease of service. While some modern cars are fun, nothing really has the feel of that E Type coupe. \r\n\r\nWhile the Peter Egan connection is interesting, it has been quite a long time since his stewardship. The gauges all seem to be in perfect order, the shifting and steering seem good and firm. The engine seems to pull well. It should also be noted that the seller has the car out on a good open road outside of the constant stop and go traffic of the city. This is exactly where the E-Type thrives. They are not a good turning car ( the front nose is too long for that). They are also not a very fast car either from a standing start or top end, but can easily keep up with modern traffic, but at 3 times the cost of fuel....\nBesides being a beautiful car to look at, they are great open road grand touring cars. As a skier, I look at them as a great Giant Slalom ski. Good acceleration from 2 gear above 2500 revs, and great fun thru looping curves. Hearing that inline 6 with triple SU's working at 3500-4500 rev's thru a big curve at 80mph was as good as it got in this car. Of course, the E-types are notorious for their unreliability, and from my experience that reputation was not unearned. But it was an attention magnet. Friends used to ask what it was like to own. I used to tell them it was like having a supermodel with brain damage as a girlfriend. Of course, owning one can be really aggravating at times, but those occasional moments of joy, the intoxicating smell of the Connelly leather, the big wood wheel and gauge cluster, and the long hood and the 3.6L in tune, make you forget all the BS the moment you jump in the cockpit and hear the engine fire up...\nThis is not my favorite color, but it is unique, has great provenance, and looks like a great driver. You are absolutely right. What I vividly remember about R&T was the editorial gift of finding good writers and letting them write about what they pleased. C/D was occasionally successful, but not as good as R&T. \r\n\r\nWhat I found and still do find, so magical about Peter Egan's writing is the quality of bringing the astonishingly varied worlds of automobiles and motorcycles (and occasional bicycles and small planes) to a level where you can imagine yourself actually IN the picture with him. Most automotive writers are able to more or less describe what it's like to drive an exotic car you will probably never even see in person, let alone drive, but they often use too many technical terms and end up removing you from the experience more than involving you. Such articles are still fun to read, but you never forget, while reading them, that you are \"here\" and the experience is \"there\". You are not in the moment with the writer. Mr. Egan's work is quite different. In his pieces, you are there with him, looking over the scene alongside him. Owned an XK150S and drove a bunch of E-Types. They are really wonderful cruisers, but I never understood how anyone could try to race one.
