He called it Superior Auto Body and the reputation he built in the 1950s brought cars in from three states away. His building was above the town\u2019s baseball fields, very non-descript\u2026built from dark cinder-blocks with a flat roof that was made even darker by the perpetual fly-ash that fell from the steel mill in town and by the soot from the coal furnace that kept the building warm in the winter.\nA number of kids would hang out at Superior but there were two carved-in-stone shop rules, no alcohol and no bad language. Break either rule and you had to leave. Relentlessly pestering him for a job paid off, I eventually became his only employee. Over the next several years, Joe taught me a lot\u2026not just about cars, but about life in general. He taught me to weld, to do lead-work, how to shrink the stretched metal of a crumpled panel, and he taught me to paint. Working with him, I learned perfection and I also learned patience. Once, after several hours of non-stop work sanding a GTO in preparation for the paint room, I was bored and I was tired in the way a 17-year old can get.\n\u201cHow much longer do I need to sand this thing?\u201d I asked. \nHis voice from the next room said, \u201cWhen your fingers start to bleed, sand for another half-hour and it should be just about ready.\u201d \nWhen I got accepted to the Peace Corps as a Diesel Mechanic Instructor for a technical school in Swaziland in 1973, it was Joe that I went to for a crash-course. He even bought an old diesel engine to teach me with. When I graduated from college and became a professor in South Dakota, Joe was one of the first people that I told.\nThere were two vehicles that were permanent fixtures at Superior Auto Body, they were there the first day that I walked in the door, and no one that I talked to had ever seen either of them run. One was a Sunbeam Talbot covered in several inches of sanding dust, overspray, and coal dust residue (it sadly ended up at Rocky\u2019s Junkyard). The other was a 1957 Chevrolet pickup truck in red oxide primer. Joe told me that he purchased it in early 1958 from an elderly man who had wrecked it while driving on a steep, snow-covered, hill that winter in Steubenville, Ohio and decided he shouldn\u2019t be driving any more. I suspect the truck only had about 1,500 miles on it.\nOne of the front fenders had been damaged in the accident so Joe pulled it off for repair and, over the next several years in the late 1950s, performed some mild custom work on the truck. He shaved all of the badges and emblems; cut two elegant air scoops into the sides of the hood; recessed the radio antenna in the front fender; the headlights and grill opening were frenched and painted body color (with a 1957 Corvette grill centered in the opening); and (a few years later) a set of \u201959 Caddy bullet taillights were frenched into the rear fenders. The dash had been reworked with a full set of SW gages. The real magic, though, was under the hood. Joe had yanked out the lump of a six-cylinder and bought a crate Corvette 283 complete with mechanical fuel injection and coupled to a four-speed transmission. An exhaust system had never been hooked up\u2026as we learned one evening when Joe went home for dinner and a couple of us got a set of jumper-cables and started it.\nJoe Makara was a brilliant man, he taught himself computers, refrigeration and microwave technology and would recondition units for donation to local volunteer fire departments. He also designed, in his head, a revolutionary type of lighting technology for automobiles that would make everything at that time (1990s) obsolete. By then, I had moved back to Ohio and was teaching at Bowling Green State in the College of Technology. I begged him to visit me and discuss his idea with the Automobile Technology Faculty. But, he wouldn\u2019t tell me (or anyone else) anything about how his system worked\u2026only that he was convinced it would.\nBy 2000, Joe was only putting in a few hours per week at the shop. He had been battling some sort of degenerative muscular/skeletal disease and was nearly hunched in half. I moved to Dubai a year later and would try to catch him at the shop whenever I was back in country. His health continued to fail and he died early this past spring\u2026\nA week or so later, I was in town to visit my family and, while driving past his shop, I noticed that the door was opened. I stopped and introduced myself to the young man inside who told me that he had heard my name from Makara for years. He said he purchased the shop six-months earlier and was going to use it to tinker with his car collection. I looked around the shop and it was exactly as I remembered it in 1966. I walked into the paint room where I had painted hundreds of cars in the days before respirators, wearing a red bandana tied over my nose like a \u201850s TV Western bank robber. There was the small, delicate, aircraft torch I learned to weld with, the Binks #7 spray gun\u2026so many memories. \nI started to tell the young man about \u201cthe Truck\u201d (the name it was known as all over town)\u2026and he said, \u201c\u2026Oh, it\u2019s still here. Would you like to see it?\u201d\nHe rolled the door to a lean-to shed behind the shop open and there it sat. Forlorn, for sure, one headlamp had been knocked out and who knows what condition the frame was in at that point. The Corvette valve covers and fuel injection unit were missing and a couple of tires were flat.\nI took a couple of photos to show Gracie, my wife, as she had heard stories of it over the years, and we rolled the door shut. Last I heard, \u201cthe Truck\u201d had been sold, though I don\u2019t know to whom.
