Even if the smog tech has no idea of what they are looking at, he/she would notice a lot of very obvious aftermarket silicone vacuum hoses and stainless braided hoses, and would then pull out the emissions equipment spec manual and snoop further.\n\nIn case you failed to notice, the engine has a Carrera 3.2 intake manifold to accommodate the aftermarket EFI system (which is a great idea for a non smog-controlled 930/965 engine in terms of HP potential), as well as the aftermarket turbo and exhaust system. The entire stock CIS intake and fuel system would need to be swapped in, along with the air injection pump system and stock turbo/exhaust and catalysts (main cat and mini version for the wastegate). It would be easier to drop the engine to perform the swap, and the factory \"piggyback\" control units for the CIS would need to be reinstalled. It is likely that wiring changes would be needed and that the fuel pumps would also need to be replaced with CIS-specific versions (though an appropriate fuel pressure regulator would probably make the stock pumps work with the current EFI system).\n\nThis is all certainly within the capability of a \"good air-cooled specialist\" as you say, but it would definitely not be quick nor cheap, even with all factory parts on hand.\n\nThe CA BAR is cracking down on smog shops big time, and even non-savvy smog techs are looking for any visual discrepancy they can find to avoid getting busted. Most of what I pointed out in my previous post has to do with the visual portion of the CA smog inspection, which has aways been in place but has been much more strictly enforced of late. All of the factory-installed emission control equipment has to be present and functional, regardless of tailpipe emissions. \n\nOf course most smog techs have no idea what to look for on an exceedingly rare Porsche 964 Turbo that is still supposed to have CIS fuel injection, but you never know. We routinely take customer cars to a smog station across the street, and it is obvious that they have been scrutinized by the BAR of late . . . . we recently had trouble with a customer's '77 911 with a fully legitimate and smog-legal engine swap to a later '81 SC 3.0 engine (we had performed the swap ~15 years ago and had no issues until a few months ago) and the car had to go to the smog referee to clear the issue up. A lot of BS and paperwork, but all was OK in the end. \n\nAnother case happened with an old POS VW Rabbit pickup that we sometimes work on. It turned out that it had the hood swapped in the past and the replacement hood had a different emissions label. This is the crap we have deal with these days, and this is despite the fact that both vehicles in question passed the tailpipe portion of the test with flying colors! \n\n@PaulSB\n\nI have no doubt that this 964T could easily pass CA tailpipe emissions test with a properly controlled oxygen sensor and catalytic converter and some basic tuning. With the less-stringent emissions standards of the late 1970s, early 3.3-liter 930s can be made to pass the tailpipe portion of the smog test without any form of exhaust after-treatment (either the dreaded thermal reactors or catalytic converters) as long as the engine is healthy and some tuning is done.\n\nThe issue is the visual portion of the smog test, which can get people into big trouble.
