The 1,85 Triumph engine \u201cfeels\u201d and even sounds very similar to the later B engine (I\u2019ve owned both), it keeps up with traffic and parts are available for it as it\u2019s very similar to the the 2,0 Triumph TR7 engine. They will always seep a bit of oil; they are English built and if they stop leaking you know you have a problem. Steering will build your biceps when parking on all non- power assisted 99s. The badge on the right side of the trunk is not factory; I am wondering if this was a converted automatic (a good thing - the BW 35 was a dog) and the badge may cover the holes where the \u201cAutomatic\u201d badge once was. This one is an early \u201872 (10/71 production) that appears to be Tyrol Green which was later supplanted by the lighter hue Verona Green; the horn button on the steering wheel has the 1971 style aluminum tabs on each end and the 1,85 badge on the grille, both of which were deleted later in the model year. Very nice to see the OEM radio in the location that it always should have been; because of a redesign of the HVAC system, later 99s (post \u201873) moved it to a hard plastic box that hung below the dashboard and looked like an afterthought. The \u201872s were the first cars to have a heated seat (driver only) and energy absorbing bumpers. 99s are starting to get noticed. The physically identical 1973 99 EMS seat set in far better shape, with the rear seatback needing repair at the top - typical sun damage. The EMS front buckets very well preserved as they had worn the included seat covers for a good long time. \n\nI used the original-to-car 1972 factory bulkhead/folding cargo floor, attaching the red cloth 1978 GL seatback. Even though the '78 GL donor a three-door, the seatback mated perfectly with '72 sedan folding bulkhead. The parts book gives the engine serial numbers for the 1.85 in 1972 in the range of 87671 to 123000, so your number certainly fits in that range. Would someone have swapped the whole drivetrain, perhaps under warranty 40 some years ago? That could be a reasonable answer, but the trans number doesn't jive with the information I have for any year 99 through 1980, and none of them were 7 digits. I just looked at the trans number on my '73 and it's clear as can be - 517819, which fits in the '73 range of numbers. Does it surprise me? Certainly not, because over the years I have found many discrepancies while researching 99 information. I'm probably more disappointed than surprised that it doesn't compute.\r\n\r\nI read one of your comments where you said there were three holes in the deck lid and the automatic emblem looks like it has three pins on the back to fit in those holes. That font on the emblem matches up what Saab used back in the early 70's and a picture can be found on page 11 here:\r\n\r\nhttp://www.vintagesaabmanuals.org/uploads/1/9/1/5/19154273/71_saab_99_brochure.pdf\r\n\r\nThe emblems used on the later years used 2-sided tape and there were no holes in the body where they mounted on the right side of the deck lid. The rockers, the engine bay, the trunk are all intact. What I like about this car is the old paint and honest patina...not scary but cool. The engine is certainly not a powerhouse but it feels bright...and a bit spunky in fact. We don't really know how Saab built cars way back then, and how serial numbers of engines and transmissions were mated together or if the order was even numerical. That info might be in a build sheet but I've never seen one. I have an original window sticker from a 75EMS and the trans or engine numbers are not on that document.\r\n\r\nAll this digging for info and I did find out that after 20 years of owning my '73, that the transmission was most likely the original(the only original piece of the car that I haven't changed), and I never knew that until yesterday.
