Same white color and very similar plush interior with 3 row seating and some very cool interior accessories that were rare for '80s cars. It had the 2.8L 5M engine but carbureted. \r\n\r\nAs a young budding gearhead, I had a lot of admiration and respect for our cool Crown Wagon, and it drew a fair bit of attention on the island as only a small number were imported and typically driven by professionals.\r\n\r\nI used to get dropped to school and picked up every day, it was our beach car and as a family we went everywhere in it. We racked up lots of miles and memories as a young family.\r\n\r\nSadly, my parents were coming home from a New Years party at abut 1am, a drunk driver piloting a very modified Mazda RX2 wandered into on-coming traffic and hit my parents head on, destroying both cars. If it wasn't for the incredibly strong frame of the Crown, I'm not sure my parents would be alive today. It is cooled by the rear AC unit but the cooler itself is very small. It is made to hold three Japanese sized canned drinks which are thinner than standard 12 oz cans. I can't say that I've ever used the cooler but I know the rear AC unit works. I've uploaded some additional photos of the cooler with a standard size can for reference. \r\n\r\nRegarding parts, a great resource for finding parts for these JDM vehicles is this website: https://jp-carparts.com/toyota/figlist.php?maker=toyota&type=331170&cartype=34\r\n\r\nYou can view the parts diagrams and pull part number info from them. I usually run the part number through google to see if it is readily available in the US or on eBay. You can also order the part directly from Japan using that same website if you are unable to find a source in the US.\r\n\r\nThe steering on this car is a pitman arm type and I believe the ball socket on either the pitman arm or idler arm has some slop in it. I asked the mechanic to point this out last time it was on the lift and he showed me the components in question but honestly I don't know a lot about this type of steering setup. His questions were: \"How is the audio setup and is everything with the audio system functional?\" \r\n\r\nWith the audio system the only thing that does not currently function are the rear audio controls because the factory head unit was removed and the audio can't be faded front/back (I'll attempt to explain why). From the factory the wagon came with 6 speakers, 4 door speakers and 2 mid-woofers in the rear ceiling. There is also a factory amp under the 2nd row seats. I replaced the 4 door speakers with Alpine speakers but left the factory mid-woofers because I couldn't find a drop-in replacement. I wanted to have all 6 speakers function when installing the Alpine head unit so I used an adapter from Beat-Sonic that lets you wire 6 speakers into a 4 channel head unit but you lose the ability to fade when doing so. There is a parking brake bypass also wired into the head unit so you can access bluetooth controls without having the brake set. Finally there is an adapter that takes the two factory antenna connectors and combines them into one plug that connects to the head unit. I guess having two antenna connectors was common on Japanese cars of this era. I wrapped all the wiring in loom harness tape to make everything look tidy and protect the wiring.\r\n\r\nThe only issue with sound quality is because the audio is double amplified with the factory amp and the aftermarket head unit there is a slight static noise even with no audio playing if you have the volume turned up. You should be able to register it in CA no problem since it has an Oregon title. The only thing I'm unsure of would be getting it smog checked, I don't know if there are exemptions for imported cars. As for the rust, it is very light surface rust that came from the foot of the jack. It could easily be cleaned up and some fluid film applied if you were concerned about it. The main thing you will find yourself doing at first is activating the wipers when you go to turn because the stalks for the wipers and turn signals are opposite compared to LHD. The biggest \"safety\" concern would be attempting to pass slow traffic on a 2 lane road. You have to get almost halfway into the oncoming lane to see if you are clear to overtake which can be sketchy. Also going through drivethrus is fun. \r\n2) Work performed by me includes: \r\nReplaced PCV valve/grommet, serpentine belt, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap/rotor/o rings, timing belt, water pump and associated gaskets, camshaft seals, front main seal, timing belt bearing and tensioner, serpentine belt tensioner, valve cover gaskets/bolts/sealing washers, various vacuum lines, throttle body cleaning, dropping transmission pan to replace oil strainer/clean magnets/clean shift solenoids, air filter replacement, and an oil change or two. I used OEM parts for all the critical items including timing belt, water pump, and tensioners. \r\nAll other work was performed by shops in the area and can be seen on the work orders in the gallery. \r\n3) You will need to be willing to source parts on this vehicle if you want to take it to a mechanic but there are several good sites for doing this. The transmission was used in other US spec Toyota/Lexus products so parts are available. The engine is an older brother to the 2JZ-GE which was in US spec vehicles as well. There are lots of common parts between the two engines. If you are willing to help source parts your mechanic should be able to work on it. A vehicle model year 1975 or older does not need a smog (in use test) in California. So there is actually a 1 year gap between the two rules. 1975 would need to meet direct import requirements (FTP testing with a certified lab), but then would not need to be smogged after the initial direct import requirements are met.\n4) Meeting California Direct Import requirements means more than just passing smog. I personally own a twin to this car. Mine however is a 1992 and has a few extra options. Nonetheless this is a great example of these wagons. So far this car has been one of if not my favorite car I\u2019ve ever owned. Super smooth and quiet. I did notice a few things on this one that I do have some questions about. \r\n\r\nThese cars are notorious for having the paint on the door guards and the lower door cladding fade unevenly and faster. Even from super pristine examples they show fading. However these look immaculate. Has this had paint work done to the car? I also noticed the brushing on the left side wheels.\r\n\r\nThe play in the steering wheel is another issues that comes with every crown wagon. There isn\u2019t a single one out there that won\u2019t have this issue. A pitman arm and an idler arm will fix it right up and both are readily available over seas. Might also want to invest into tie rod ends. \r\n\r\nIs the ac fully operational and has it been converted from r-12 to r-134?\r\n\r\nLastly the other major thing to consider is brakes. The brake rotors for these are specific for this car and hard to come by. There is a guy in Indonesia that has some. The front brake pads are almost a direct swap from a 95 Toyota T100 pick up truck and can be picked up from your local part store. The rear drum shoes can always be relined. There must have been enough left on the rotors for the shop to machine them but I checked the work order and it doesn't mention the remaining rotor thickness.
