However, the serial# does not differentiate or identify whether this a Special, a Club or a Charleston model. The Charleston was basically a Club with a special two tone paint scheme, as were most if not all of the special edition models. (Dolly, Cocorico, beachcomber, etc.) They would both have the larger dash, the single spoke steering wheel, the larger rear bumper, the interior light. A Charleston was never a single color model and never the bright red of this car. Only the Charleston had the round chrome headlights of this car and the grey cloth interior of the style that is in this car. I would suggest that this is a 2cv Special that received the chrome headlights, the Charleston-style upholstery, and the badge on the back at one point after its manufacture. These are extremely easy to work on and in a few minutes you can have the front fenders removed and have very good engine access. My 602 was like this one and it would run freeway speeds no problem. We drove mine to a Citroen Rally in Santa Barbara. It was great fun and a nice group of folks. Parts are readily available and may be a bit more expensive but not too bad. If you want a Microcar like an Isetta or Messerschmitt you may find that freeway driving is not possible or, at least, not a great idea. My cousin convinced us to pay $800 CAN for a \u201878 (I think) Lelijke Eendje (say: lil-a-kil-ain\u2019t-ja) or ugly ducking. It was a farmers runabout. We had to make some improvements so we could drive out of Holland. A bit of rust repair here and there, touch up green paint, 2 new spark plugs, oil change and filter, new coil, two new tires, installed a cassette deck, new wipers and we were off. It was hilarious! Top speed 80kmh (sticker on back to prove). Every corner was met with fear and glee as our elbows on the window sills nearly touched the asphalt and the wheels stayed vertical! The roll back roof let the sun shine in the straight outta the dash gear selector kept us entertained. Somewhere in the Spanish backcountry we encountered a flash flood and navigated several centimetres of water running over the road. Shortly after we switched drivers and ran into the night. I awoke with my friend howling with laughter as he explained we lost the muffler and the ugly duckling now can hit 95kmh and it was barley noisier! The next day we had the pedal to the firewall and the car \u2018popped\u2019, lost power, and sputtered to the side of the road. My friend was packing his backpack while mumbling \u201ctime to get on a train and get social\u201d. I looked under the hood and discovered a missing spark plug. Apparently, my friend was drinking beer and forgot to tighten the right side plug during our tune up. I looked around the interior and found another spark plug and as luck would have it I found a pair of vice grips on top of the engine cross member stuck in the oily substrate that collected over the years. It fired back up and off we went for another few thousand kms. The car gave us endless stories and never let us down until we pulled out Genova Italy and it farted, hiccuped, and sighed off to the roadside gas station. We pulled all the identification numbers off of it and pushed it into a commercial garbage receptacle. It must have given someone quite the story when they discovered it. The real Charleston cars will have the \u201cfancier\u201d Club interior, but today I think the Special dash and simpler door panels are cooler. The only two practical disadvantages are the single front bench seat (vs two separate seats - not that this matters too much, but the bench seat is a bear to move if you are more than one driver and want different seat positions...) The other thing is the fabric roof, this car has the Special roof while the Club and Charleston would have had a roof with an all internal quick release. Here you can see the small external fasteners in the front corners of the roof. Again no biggie, just not as convenient. (And if there were any questions about the original configuration, the Italian manual clearly states 2CV6 Special.)\r\n\r\nOne comment for the owner (or future owner) - do install the hoses that lead the cooling air out through the fenders. I bought my first Tin Snail around 1975 - a Truckette - off a fellow's front lawm in Chicago - for $40 - and after a couple hrs work, drove it home, where it promtply blew a rear steel brake line. When the rear line was pinched off with visegrips, the remaining brakes worked fine and I made it home safely. Later on had a 2 window 2CV, but never liked doing a fron drum brake overhaul. \r\n\r\nHowever, in chatting with other 2CV owners and hearing thru the club grapevine that one has to be careful with these latest gearboxes. It seems that, if driven agressively in reverse, or maybe it's shifting agressively into reverse, some of these disc gearboxes have had an internal shaft nut - I believe it's the one on the pinion shaft - loosen and allow the pinion to move around and damage the transmission. \r\n\r\nI have no direct experience with this issue, but just want to pass this warning along to the future owner, whoever that may be. Any one new to Duck ownership should learn as much as he/she can about their maintenance and quirks - just as with any classic car like these. It pays to join a club asap and talk with owners to learn what's been happening with their cars, even if you're a relative expert at classic car maintenance and repair. That coil will have to be replaced, depending on which one you get, could run between $60 and $110. Kenji has the original \u201cDucellier\u201d types but I think the higher performing Burton2cvparts is better at handling the heat from the air-cooled engine. We had a ball, just pedal to the floor all day long, cruising the M1 and other fwys at about 75 - no sweat! Left the backseat out so we could haul parts with us. Slept in a farmer's field one night next to the car. \r\n\r\nSomewhere around 1977, a friend entered his Duck in a timetrials event at Soldier Field in chicago. Halfway thru his lap, after a 4CV Renault had just run the course, a corner worker ran over and hollered at my friend to \"stop!, you're in danger! The car's suspension is broken!\" When the worker saw the car roll 45 degrees he freaked, and stopped his run - he'd never seen a Duck corner before even tho it was in no danger of flipping - the suspension is amazing! \r\n\r\nYou always keep your elbows inside when you corner hard in a Snail, as you might just grind them off without the car flipping! That's part of the genius of the design - the body rolls so slowly and the suspension travel is SO LONG that the inertial mass of the body attempting to roll the car doesn't reach its limit before the car is THRU the corner and rolls back - so no flip - no wheel lifting, except maybe the rear! My R16 would do the same on its all torsionbar setup. Many times a 911 driver has come up to me during a road rally stop and asked me if I knew I only had 3 wheels on the ground in the 16 - hey, who cares?
