Metal work is correctly done using quality replacement panels. Paint colors look right, paint and body work is very good, panel gaps are very good, interior is correct and well executed. Has all the 1960 features, non adjustable front bench, the radio is correct trapezoid push button Bendix. I only spotted a few minor and easily fixed issues if you want to go full correct with it.\r\nPop out latches are wrong, they are later style, should have spoons.\r\nParcel tray should be covered in vinyl.\r\nunderside is completely painted, should be primed and painted only in the wheel wells, frame horn.\r\nAshtrays are missing.\r\nMiddle seat kick panel is missing.\r\nOn another note, the bus would have come with either a 36 horse \u201cbastard\u201d engine or 40 horse, so the engine is not original. It\u2019s a A stock 1600 with a freeway flyer and is a terrible combination. The gearing is to tall and you will find yourself down shifting on the freeway to go up grades. The owner relayed that information to me this morning and I set out to quantify this with the extremely large and detailed stack of receipts that accompanies this bus.\r\n\r\nSure enough, on January 9, 2018 the following parts were ordered as part of a 1776cc rebuild kit. I am including the freshly scanned images for all to see here.\r\n\r\n@bat if it's not too much to ask, could you please update the auction body to remove reference of a 1600cc engine and update that to 1776cc engine?\r\n\r\nI'm very sorry for the oversight to all parties. There is no listing of the engine VIN number on the VIN tag. As a point of information, VW will not give me the correct engine number for the car but if I give them the number of the engine in the car, they will confirm if it is indeed the matching engine. Clearly, this is to prevent people from fraudulently renumbering a block to increase the value of a bus of this vintage. I'm no VW specialist but the number in the photo on the possibly original engine is likely a casting number, not a VIN-specific number. If it is the correct engine, that would be quite the find. Obviously, no sane driver would want to go far using a low HP original engine but it would enhance the value in the future to have a rebuilt version of the original engine accompanying the bus on its 'life journey'.\r\n\r\nWhen I get around to restoring the bus that I have, I will rebuild the old components, stash them away, and put in things that actually make the bus a join to drive (suspension, transmission, engine, and so on). It takes hardly any time at all to swap out components on a bus of this era. Speaking of engines, unless you are a flat-lander, and never plan on going over a mountain pass, the 1700 cc engine is wholly inadequate (please note that I am rounding off the engine size). A friend has a 1900 cc engine that is newly built and in perfect tune but he still finds it sluggish on the mountain passes of British Columbia. He will upgrade the engine once more to 2300cc. A 2400cc engine would be the best (as you can never have too much torque in these old beasts) but the upgrade cost to gain another 7% greater cc count does not make it worthwhile. \r\n\r\nAlthough my bus is a 1959 23-window and would have maximum value if made perfectly stock, what is the fun in that I ask you? My friend's bus is highly altered yet he walks away with awards no matter where he shows it. The beauty of his alterations never ceases to delight the eye of whoever beholds it. \r\n\r\nThere is magic in the bones of these old split-window buses, but only if you do everything you can to make them a joy to travel in. The other upside to owning a bus is that the VW community (of which I am not a part) is a collection of very passionate people who are a delight to spend time with. My friend does meetup-ups with 5 to 50 VW owners in campgrounds all summer long. There is always a wide age range of owners and usually a motley collection of dogs, kids, spouses, and hangers-on taking part. In other words, an honest-to-god community event.\r\n\r\nOn the issue of anal-retentive pedantic nit-pickers, I have only four words (and one punctuation mark) to convey to you: god-bless-you-all!
