Major Applethorn did not fit that category.\r\n\r\nWhen asked why he only carried a photograph of one of the boys in his wallet, he replied, \u201cYou\u2019ve seen Juan, you\u2019ve seen Amal.\u201d Amal was equally put off by the fact that Juan would always get a card from Dad on his birthday, but he would claim to have forgotten the fact that it was Amal\u2019s birthday, despite the fact they were twins.\r\n\r\nSuch details may have been why Juan was gifted a college education at Texas A&M after graduation, while Amal went to work at The Rusty Hammer Hardware Store and stayed in Fort Stockton.\r\n\r\nJuan would eventually earn a degree in industrial design and be hired by General Motors. He paid his dues and worked his way up the corporate ladder. Earning his chops by becoming the \u201cFather of the Opera Window\u201d, and inventing the spring-loaded hood ornament, he eventually found himself on the \u2018Cutlass Crew\u2019 in the early seventies, part of the team of GM\u2019s finest that created the best selling cars in America for years running.\r\n\r\nWhen told that he had earned a promotion to be the Lead Stylist / Designer for the next generation Cutlass four-door, it was a dream come true. He couldn\u2019t wait to get back to Fort Stockton and tell the family about his new position and hopefully find the inspiration he was looking for.\r\n\r\nSecond day back in town, Amal left work at the hardware store early, picked Juan up at home, and the two of them headed out in Amal\u2019s Ford Ranchero for an overnight camping trip. Just like old times. Heading south out of town on US 285, they were about half way to Sanderson when Amal pulled the Ranchero over to the side of the road.\r\n\r\nThe two of them made their way through the cow pasture beside the highway where they harvested about three Folger\u2019s coffee cans full of psilocybin mushrooms that only grow on the fresh turds of Belted Galloway cattle. Brewed into a tea and consumed slowly, the effects can seem like being on the stage of a Grateful Dead concert for about twelve hours straight.\r\n\r\nNext day, the twins were inspired.\r\n\r\nAmal headed to the back room of the hardware store where he cobbled together a push broom, a 1/4 HP electric motor and a roll of fishing line. An hour later, the weed whacker was born.\r\n\r\nJuan headed over to the Lucky Lady Lounge with a sketch book, a number two pencil, and a couple green Crayolas. By mid-afternoon, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon Brougham was completed.\r\n\r\nBased on the fact that cow-pie mushrooms were not commercially available to the car buying public, Juan was eventually given a severance package from GM. He took the money and opened up a Yugo dealership in Ozona. \r\n\r\nPeople have to judge for themselves which brother found success and which did not. I remember the sheer terror and race to get off the road surface as we'd see that Cutlass barrel by with only the top of Ethel's hat showing over the dash. \r\n\r\nI vaguely remember the multiple cones we'd used as goal markers being run over by that cutlass, regardless of how far to the sides of the street we tried to move them. \r\n\r\nUnsure the point of this story aside from the fact that the fact our parents allowed us to play in the street explains alot.
