Back then, the new models were a big deal and were often kept 'secret'' until the introduction dates, all of which pretty fell in late September. Often the really restyled ones would be carried on the transporters with covers on them. We used to ride our bikes to the showrooms to see the new cars. \r\n\r\n1958 was the styling pinnacle at GM.. the whole line except Cadillac which blew out in '59. \r\n\r\nOf course, this was when cars were styled, not by aerodynamicists, with accountants looking over their shoulders, but by artists. I mean, LOOK at that grille and dashboard.. those pieces all had to be formed and then buffed and chromed. Like the 58 Chevy, all the expense of the tooling and the dies was for one year only. It belonged to a man who became one of my best friends named Darrel Yoder. He was the oldest Pontiac/ Cadillac dealer in the State of Texas. They started their dealership in the mid 20's. It was named Yoder Pontiac-Cadillac and was located in McAllen, Texas. When I first saw the car it was a non running project. It was a California car and was very solid. I don't recall any rust anywhere. 58 Bonnevilles were Darrel's favorite car and is mine also. I didn't buy the car because I was not financially able to do a complete restoration. Darrel's first new car was a 1958 Bonneville hardtop. Darrel started the body off restoration in approximately 1998. He left no nut or bolt untouched. This car was done to the highest standards and I can assure you that it is done as close to factory specs as he could get it. Some of the options are added but they are exactly as they would have been if they came from the factory. He was the most knowledgeable 58 person that I have ever met and had the largest collection of NOS parts that I am aware of. Everything on this car is either NOS or redone. I assisted with picking some of the options mainly because I hoped to purchase the car at some point. The colors are called Burma and Calypso green. I know most people turn their nose up at green but you just need to see it in person. They are absolutely stunning. The restoration took approximately 2 to 3 years, I bought the car from him in about 2002 or 2003. I think I had about 2 years and sold it to a man in Mission, Texas. The reason I sold it was because it was just too nice to drive. I put less than 50 miles on it. He had it until about 2012. He passed away and the man who owns it now bought it from his estate. I know these cars well as I have had over 50 of them in the last 35 years. I still have 4. A 58 fuel injected Bonneville hardtop top sold at Barrett Jackson approximately 4 or 5 years ago for $215,600. It didn't compare to this car. I was there. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer are more correct one. Just for info they only made 9,144 hardtops and 3,096 convertibles for a total of 12,240. Those metal back bucket seats were first available in Pontiac Bonnevilles in 1958 and became available on Cadillac and Buick in 1959, 1960 and 1961. Dad paid $5500 for the car, big bucks in those days. I remember driving it up to Vancouver Canada. It was a car only made,unfortunately, for 1 year.\r\n\r\nI remember he told me why he liked GM cars; they had an X frame. However the Bonneville had an X frame with no side rails, a precurser to unit bodies. I presume.\r\n\r\nHe gradually made his way up the GM ladder of cars from Chevrolet, to Oldsmobile, to Buick and finally in 1965, a Cadillac so long we could not close the garage door. Too bad GM dropped Pontiac, Olds. They were different cars often sharing bodies but usually their own brand of engines.\r\n\r\nLooks like a very nice car.
