The trans is from a 1978-1980 Datsun 280ZX (non-turbo). They had (2): one with .82 overdrive in 5th and the other with .78 overdrive - this is the latter. The rear end ratio is 3.9:1 from an MGB. I don't know what the revs are at 80 as the car does not have a tach. I will say that on the first open highway test drive when the car was built, I had a friend follow and pace me. When the speedo in the Magnette read 60 mph, my pace car indicated 86 mph (ummm... some calibration required!) The car was steady and stable with about 1/3 throttle travel remaining. The 18GA is set up and machined to accept a mechanical tach drive, unfortunately, there is no aesthetically appealing place to mount a tachometer inside the car. After 50-odd years of building and driving MGs, I sort of have a \"tuned\" tach-by-ear, and THAT tach said roughly 3800 - 4000 rpm at 86 with at least another 1000 - 1200 RPM to comfortably go before the valves started floating (temp gauge in the middle of the \"N\", 70 lbs oil pressure). I would say that this car could probably keep up 100 MPH pretty comfortably. When the at the time current owner commissioned me to build the car, the mandate was for a long distance comfortable and quiet \"road-trip\" car. Even in standard form the 18GA was built to accommodate 4600 - 4800 RPM for extended periods, the \"hand fettled\" nature of this engine and the meticulous balancing that Terry did would probably extend that to easily tolerate 5200 - 5500 RPM for extended periods. Allen Bachelder's (commenter below) Magnette has the same transmission and rear end, and has completed MANY cross country road trips at 70+ MPH very comfortably.
