The shock of the landing actually bursts the amniotic sac and forces the newborn giraffe to start breathing, as well as severing the umbilical cord.\r\n\r\nArn and his wife, Audrey had a daughter they named Shannon whose birth had been no less traumatic than that of a giraffe, which lead to her being the only child they ever had.\r\n\r\nWhile Arn was a man of modest means, he did all he could to spoil the child, as she had become the light of his life the moment she burst forth on the scene. He had been saving to buy her a car from nearly the moment he put a new Kidillac pedal car under the Christmas tree in 1960. When Shannon turned 15 in the fall of 1972, he began looking for what would be her first car. He scoured the used car lots around Fort Stockton, the want ads in the Stockton Telegram-Dispatch and looked on the Community Bulletin Board right next to the Coke machine at the Piggly Wiggly every time he went into the store.\r\n\r\nIt was the Piggly Wiggly that finally paid off. He saw, written on the back of a recipe card and pinned to the cork board, in the finest cursive handwriting he\u2019d ever seen, a brief ad : \u201cOne owner 1955 Buick Century Rivera four door hardtop,\u201d it said, \u201c63,000 miles. Beautiful two-tone green with white top. Always maintained. $900\u201d\r\n\r\nArn took the card and slid it behind the pocket protector in his shirt pocket and called the number when he got home. Turns out it was owned by an old widow in town who knew she should no longer be driving. An appointment was made to see the car, and it was even more beautiful than he\u2019d expected. The offer to purchase the car was not immediately accepted. Negotiations took place over the course of several weeks. The issue wasn\u2019t price; Arn was willing to pay $950, or even more. It was more a process of her letting go and making sure Arn would be the right caretaker for the Buick.\r\n\r\nEventually the transaction was completed and the widow even agreed to store the Buick in her garage until Shannon\u2019s birthday so it could be kept a surprise. She insisted Arn take the keys, however, lest she be tempted to get behind the wheel again.\r\n\r\nShannon did the best she could to act excited when she was blindfolded and taken out to the driveway on the big day of the presentation. She could tell her dad was proud of the gift, and didn\u2019t want him to be disappointed. But what she\u2019d really wanted was a Mustang or Camaro.\r\n\r\nShe soon came to appreciate the big sedan for its quirkiness and size. She could get three friends in the trunk when they snuck into the Prairie Twin Drive-In outside of town. On more than one occasion the big Buick, several friends, and a bottle or two of Boones Farm provided a night of memories that would last a lifetime.\r\n\r\nOne of those occurred when her best friend talked her into \u2018mooning\u2019 the patrons of the Bijou Theater as they exited the double feature one Saturday night. The Boones Farm Strawberry Hill had impaired her driving so her boyfriend had taken the wheel, but it didn\u2019t impair her courage from the passenger seat.\r\n\r\nAs the theater was letting out, the tri-colored Buick rolled up to the flashing marquee of the theater, the crowd who\u2019d just seen \u2018The Way We Were\u2019 drying their eyes and making their way outside. Shannon rolled the window down, dropped her pants, and hung her bare assets out the window while her boyfriend called attention to the antics by liberally pressing the chrome-ringed horn on the massive white wheel and her friends screamed with delight in the back seat.\r\n\r\nThat\u2019s when things took a turn. \r\n\r\nAs she attempted to position her puckered posterior back into the cabin of the Buick, the loop on her Levi\u2019s hooked on the door handle of the hardtop and pulled it straight up. There were several iterations but the idea was that it was supposed to be smooth and you didn't notice it shift which was apparently a luxury selling point. The powerglide is just a two speed and I think most would agree is more durable and efficient. Having a Dynaflow rebuilt requires finding a transmission guy who is very knowledgeable and likely very old.
