And the roll-overs were a bit blown out of proportion, as jmartens mentioned below. I had Firestone Wilderness AT tires (the subject of that Explorer recall) on mine while I was running down an icy I-75 at 70 mph when a tractor-trailer ran me off the road. I went over a small, snowy berm separating the right lane from an entrance ramp and it totally kept its composure and I got right back on the highway not skipping a beat. My '89 didn't have the Bordeaux Bomb (rather, it was equipped with the Mazda 5-speed), but it also didn't have the great squared off front end looks of these earlier models. Just keep changing the trans fluid, add an aftermarket trans oil cooler if towing, and don't let the engine overheat (the 2.9 was susceptible to head warping when run too hot) and it will last a long, long time. Plus the manual x-fer case & locking hubs are key. Great truck, GLWTA.
