That's a huge deal for a post-1975 308 (GT4 or GTB/S) for any Cali buyers. Most 308's have had enough modifications that they'd never pass a smog test. So this is a huge plus for this car. \r\n\r\nWeird little story here: I was driving to work in my 1974 GT4 in about 1994 - back when a 1974 still required a smog test. There was a mobile smog testing station on the side of the road on the way to work! I have never seen one of these before or after. But it was the total deal: a dyno type roller set-up, all the related equipment, and all under a white tent. They were pulling cars off the road at random. As I recall (I could be wrong), it was for some sort of research project (they were not there to ticket non-complying cars). Anyway, when they saw a sleek, low-slung, exotic black sports car driving up, they were so excited. And then when they saw it was a Ferrari, they were overjoyed. Two CHP motorcycle cops were doing the \"recruitment\". But the car passed the test, and the grad-student-esque guys doing the monitoring (with white lab coats!), well, their enthusiasm turned to disappointment. I vaguely recall that I was told it voluntary, after the fact! Such a weird experience. Not to do a hijack, but do anyone California residents recall these \"spot smog test checks\"? \r\n\r\nAnd to make up for any possible mini-hijack, I've been a GT4 owner since...1994....and it's almost tied for first place of the favorite car I've ever owned. And the all-time best cockpit with amazing visibility and a fantastic dash design (much better than the GTB/S). And that sound right behind your head!! Intoxicating. And I have never seen this color combo EVER. View out the screen is open and low down, the suspension (mine on QA1's) is sublime. The extra 8\" wheelbase makes it hug the road; no twitchiness, no hard suspension bangs over potholes, just a pure connection to the road. The sound at revs is vintage F1 magical. Had mine singing to 8300 in numerous tunnels. I've laid numerous 30 foot burnouts, and hit bumps that lifted the car off the ground, and that tough oval frame, and that super strong trans and drivetrain takes it all in stride. Bertone's build quality is excellent. While Bertone design questioned at launch; it is now so seductively cool. Nothing out there in the last 30 years can match the edge of the wedge. People stare like it's a spaceship from another planet. While the car does have to pass smog to be sold anywhere in the state, once title is transferred, unless it is registered in the Bay Area, LA basin, or Sacramento metro area (I think those are all but am not positive so anyne thinking of buying in CA should check CARB or the DMV) no semiannual testing is needed. I live in the Sierra foothills and have for 20 years and I bought a new pickup here while the SF peninsula was still my permanent residence. Thanks to a savvy saelsman I learned that if I registered the truck up here, which as long as I had a mailing address here I could do, I not only avoided the smog tests but saved several hundred dollars on sales tac. So I then changed the registration on all my vehicles (one being only a couple of years old) and that was the end of the smog tests. \r\nUnfortunately it is impossible to access a simple list of counties or zip codes where regular smog checks are needed. All you appear to be able to do is enter the zip code where the car will be regisgered and learn which of three categories apply...and only the third, which claims it applies only to \"more rural areas\" exempts you from annual inspections. He didn't mention anything about the motor needing work other then what he did (Judging on how the car runs, the motor is just fine). At that point I had all the koni shocks rebuilt. I rebuilt all the brakes, and soft lines were replaced. All the electrics work, the passenger side window is slow to go up and down but I've learned to live with it. I never changed the clutch but it has plenty of life left in it. The WXW tires were new old stock with no cracking or dryrot and work nicely with the car. The scuffs on the fenders were there when I bought the car. They are on top of the paint and I never buffed the car out. I've only ever waxed the car. The paint is original to the car (as far as I can tell) and that is how it has aged. Unfortunately, without pulling off one of the heads you just can't tell from the car. Check on the cam pulleys also. It may have been only on the earlier cars but they were plastic. Mine are steel and my car's a 75 so they were changed. Checking the cam pulleys are easy-you just need a magnet.\r\n\r\nOne more thing-drive it!
