I don't have any idea. The guy who rebuilt the right gauge was clearly mostly retired in 2018; my mechanic had used him for repair of British gauges and electronics for at least 20 years, so we almost had to beg him to do this one. I think I paid about $130 for a rebuild of the right sending unit alone. Again, the gauge functions perfectly on left, and on right, it reads 50% of true; you just double whatever the gauge shows. So it's very usable. I've been using both tanks perfectly since the rebuild in 2018.\r\n\r\nI did look at A/C when I first got it. Cost for a front-blowing unit is about $4K before installation. Plus, my mechanic said we would probably need to remove the dyno and install a proper alternator to have enough power to run it, convert the positive-ground electronics to negative-ground (which, I'm guessing, would require at least a moderate amount of electronics rewiring), etc. \r\n\r\nI live in a pretty hot part of Southern California, so I was pretty sure I wanted to install A/C so I could use the car in the summer. Turns out, the wing windows up front and air extractors in the rear do an excellent job of keeping the passenger compartment quite comfortable except on the hottest mid-summer afternoons.\r\n\r\n(As an aside, I had a rear deck-mounted A/C blower in my first Jag, a 1969 Series I XJ. It was abysmal. If you ever bother putting in A/C in one of these and you're not looking for Concourse points, don't waste your time with rear deck units.)\r\n\r\nin top gear, the MPH is pretty much 2% of the RPM. So 2500 RPM gets you 50MPH, 3000 gets you 60. My mechanic (who built the engine) asked me to keep it under 3000 during first 500 miles, and under 3500 after that. So top comfortable speed on highway is 70 MPH, which I've done. But it does feel like I'm pushing it a bit, so when I'm cruising, I'm typically around 65 - 68 MPH. A few weeks ago, a family hired me to take their kids to prom in San Diego about 80 miles away. Mark IXs are marvelously smooth driving cars that are in my opinion, superior to the RR of that period based on the XK 3.8 engine, disc brakes and suspension. ( As unbelievable as it sounds, the Mark VIIs even had a race series.) This one looks like it could be brought up to a high standard without a great deal of work.\r\n\r\nNissonger in upstate NY does a great job rebuilding the gauges. With regards to the fuel gauge issue, since both tanks use the same gauge via a toggle switch, it is 95% likely that the issue lies with the sender in the tank ( a fuel gauge is nothing more than an ammeter). If not that, then some point in the wiring with high resistance from a very dirty connection or similar. I would also try reversing connections at switch ( make LH tank read RH and similar) to see if problem flips sides.\r\n\r\nThere was an air conditioning option for these, with part of it in the trunk and cold air flowing back to compartment via a vent in the package tray ( at least rear passengers were comfortable!). Front installation messes with the firewall. I'm personally waiting for aftermarket electric AC to become viable, similar to aftermarket electric power steering units for old cars that avoid pumps and belts. There is one company in Australia making an electric AC unit today, so hopefully the market grows quickly.\r\n\r\nThese cars were originally conceived for British two lane roads where 50 MPH was cruising speed. With the 3 sp Bendix, at 70 MPH the engine revs at over 3K. If you want a better highway car, a common conversion is a GM 700r4 automatic which has overdrive in 4th The 3.8 XK engine loves it, and the last time I checked, a conversion costs around $5K all in. I was too frustrated with him to do it since the gauge is still usable on both tanks. And yes, swapped wires, and the problem tracks the sending unit. When in 'Drive', the Mark IX's 3-speed automatic starts in Low, and very quickly shifts to Intermediate. It then shifts to Direct when the speed, load, and throttle position warrant. You do not need to start driving in Low to obtain three gears.\r\n\r\nThe Mark IX also has, as you suggest, a dash switch called 'Intermediate Speed Hold'. This switch will inhibit upshift to Direct, or if already in Direct, cause a downshift to Intermediate without having to force a kick-down by pressing the accelerator to the floor. \r\n\r\nThe Intermediate Speed Hold was inoperable when I got the car, but during the engine rebuild, my mechanic addressed this and it operates properly now. I use it regularly when I'm entering a freeway on an onramp that has an incline. \r\n\r\nTo your question, I believe the tranny is a DG-250, made by Detroit Gear, a division of Studebaker. In fact, I got some tranny parts from Studebaker International during the engine build.\r\n\r\nThis transmission also has an 'anti-creep' feature that, when you come to a stop, holds the brakes 'on' until you start accelerating. This was disconnected when I got the car, and my mechanic noted that they are very often disconnected because of irritating failures. That said, the car does have minor leakage from tranny, engine, and differential. The last shot of the photos (not receipts) shows a makeshift drip pan that I keep under the car. Before I had the steering box removed and resealed and resealed and resealed and (eventually) replaced, the whole front of the drop pan was covered in power steering fluid. That has mercifully been resolved, but the other items do still leak a little. I've paid my mechanic over and over to try to get it leak free, and I've given up. This car leaks a bit. Period. I've heard other Jag collectors call it 'controlled seepage'. If you want a leak-free car, this isn't for you. It's very possible that the prior owner ditched it because it's almost impossible to see at night since it's so far off to the left of the center lighting (none of the gauges on this car are backlit). I notice that the under-dash gauge is very well backlit. \r\n\r\nW/r/t leather vs. vinyl... I expect you're right. When I bought the car, it was advertised as having a new leather interior; that was a big lie (or an incredibly ignorant seller); it had been redone in a super high-quality vinyl -- but vinyl nonetheless. And the carpets aren't correct either, but to be candid, it's all very serviceable for a daily driver. \r\n\r\nWe'll see what i choose to do with her over the next few years. If the steering is wandering, experiment with the toe-in. Take the factory setting as a start, then very gradually toe it in more. That will reduce any tendency to wander. The factory setting is always a compromise between stability and responsiveness.
