I have to wonder if this interests folks as an artifact of the late-malaise era, or as a prospective fox-hot-rod. \r\n\r\nTo the earlier comment, no this is not a Fairmont, though this was a pretty confusing time for Ford's model lineup. The Fairmont was initially considered a compact in 1978 (alongside the dreadful intermediate LTD II, and the full size LTD). By 1980, the Fairmont (or rather, the Fox platform) also carried the mid-size Granada. The Fairmont wagon was canceled, as the Granada carried the wagon, and by now if you drove a Fairmont, you were probably driving a rental car. In 1983, the Fairmont was replaced by the aero-fabulous Tempo, and the Granada was replaced with this slightly more contemporary looking LTD. In wagon form, it retained the 1978 Fairmont tail end, as even in the early 1980s, no one cared enough about wagons to bother investing in restyling those parts (even the goofy little brougham crest things on the tail lamps). It had about 70k if I recall correctly, and I sold for $2700 to young airman starting out.\r\n\r\nThese LTDs were quieter and plusher, and with this 3.8 V6, considerably quicker, than Fairmonts (except the 302-V8 Fairmonts). And these seats, for a 1980s domestic, are quite comfortable and supportive on long trips. I thought my dad's car was a good long distance cruiser.\r\n\r\nBut the LTD is still a Fairmont underneath. I've owned at least one LTD of some sort since 1998 (hence my internet handle) and in that time I've seen these go from unloved basic used car to redheaded stepchild of the Mustang, and now there seems to be genuine nostalgia for them in their own right. \r\n\r\nI assumed any clean examples of these cars were being bought to build up into Fox hot rods using Mustang bits, but the comments from some bidders on other auctions indicated that they would keep the car as is and just drive it, which I found surprising. Heck, an LTD wagon that sold on BaT back on February sold again on BaT earlier this month after the buyer drove the car for 7K miles and didn't change a thing. He took a $5500 bath on it too - that's putting your money where your mouth is :(\r\n\r\nWhatever the case, I've been slowly increasing the agreed value on my '85 LTD LX's collector car insurance policy.\r\n\r\n@TomLU86 the dashboard on these was taken straight from the '80-'82 Thunderbird. I was just a little kid at this time but even I know about the downsized LTD and Marquis, sold alongside the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis.\n\nYes the platform was Fairmont/Zephyr but these newer cars were somewhat nicer inside.
