I was 16 after all and just beginning to learn. Whether growing up in WI or in 1973 when stationed in NC where I bought a different 1959 SH that was also an automatic, both then and years later in 2 other SH cars...1957 and 1958 all had the 259 V8 installed. Given that over 1000 miles separates WI and NC or other states, it is difficult to believe that the cars with the 259 were exported to the volume you indicated. I don't know, certainly haven't had a need to research it but most sources like Wikipedia will claim that the GH presented the 289 and the SH line had the 259. \r\n\r\nMy first car developed that same rust issue...not just around the side vent areas but also on top of both fenders where the headlight ring mounts. That said, it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that both of your Hawks had the 259. Perhaps not all that were built for Export were actually exported. 1958, being a Recession year, was very hard on Studebaker. Maybe some of the Export Silver Hawks with the 259 were farmed out to US dealers. \r\nBTW, for Export, a Silver Hawk hardtop was available. Overall production dropped to less than 50,000 units. The Scotsman accounted for almost half of their production in 1958. RE the Champion 6 cylinder engine - it originally displaced 170 cu in but in 1955 the stroke was lengthened to make it 185 cu in. The \"stroker\" 6 remained in production through the end of the 1958 model year.
