It is closer to a version of an BMW R26 single, but is, in fact, unique. All air cooled BMW engines through 1968 or 69 had two oil \"slingers\" on the crankshaft that sling oil to the engine internals. There is no filter. Rather, there is a rim on each slinger that collects grit and contamination. When the rim gets full, the grit and gunk flush into the main bearings, ruining them. Good maintenance is to clean the slingers every 30K miles, otherwise the engine will need a complete rebuild around 40K miles. Special tools are needed to remove the crankshaft and dismantle the bearings. This is not an easy job, but the tools are available on line and you can do the job yourself if you are a good mechanic and have plenty of time. So, yes, this engine could have gone well over 100K miles if it has been rebuilt at least twice, and hopefully three times. The bore doesn't wear out quickly, and the engine is hardly over stressed. The gear box is durable and can be rebuilt more easily than the engine. Most of the parts are available. My only caution when driving one of these is the same as any other small, old vehicle, only more so. The brakes are not modern, and there is no safety equipment. I think I would opt for safety orange or green as a color, hoping that the 18 wheeler driver bearing down on you is not color blind. The Isetta sunroof design was a cost reduction factor, in order to avoid the additional expense of stamping a full steel roof. Many automobiles over the years were done this way, which is why older American cars had leatherette or fabric roof panels stretched over chicken wire, and many later British cars like the Austin Seven and other lower priced cars all avoided the expense of stamping a steel roof as the assembled side panels provided a perimeter frame for the opening and a fabric insert would cut costs while also allowing the benefit of a sunroof that could be opened for air or sunlight.", "likes": 0, "timestamp": 1615418779, "type": "comment"}]
