He didn\u2019t shy away from 400 miles one way distances. I think 40-45 mph is a realistic cruising speed, so it\u2019s slow but relative for its size and age they drive well. Light years better than some other European economy cars of that era. I once had a -54 Lloyd LP400S where 5 miles seemed like a looong trip. \n\nI did have a -58 500 Nuova that I used as a daily driver for a while back in the late 80\u2019s and you could tell the quality of Fiat\u2019s engineering in that they are so surprisingly usable. There is a gap between third and fourth gear that makes this city car into an acceptable over the road car ... if you are patient and do not mind being passed by the appliances of today. And a taller rear end ratio is probably in order if one wishes to use it a lot. The standard ratios (4.875 and 5.125) are a bit \"short\" on today's roads.\r\n\r\n1949: The front suspension of the original Fiat 500 design had already been strengthened beginning 1946. A good thing that seems to have happened in stages but was definitely completed before 1949 when telescopic dampers were employed beginning supposedly with chassis 135304, so slightly earlier than this chassis number. 1949 also saw the introduction of the use of the alloy cylinder head on engines that continued to be labelled \"500B\". I cannot say it happened prior to this chassis/engine number, but it seems possible. The engine number should be stamped on the front of the block just below the cylinder head, risht of center. There may also be casting date codes on the left side of the block in an area that is rather open and often easy to see. The chassis number should be stamped on the arch (right side) supporting the front leaf spring and can be very difficult to see and photograph but phone cameras are often thin enough to fit on places that full sized cameras cannot. A flashlight held at an angle may help illuminate the number more clearly? There may also be a body number visible on the right side of the area (high up) near the engine compartment?\r\n\r\nThe Italian papers show two license plate numbers, one from Pavia issued 1949 and the other from Milano in 1970. Each can be researched to learn the official paper trail history of the car. Ownership history seems likely to be identified already for Milano (1970-plus) but who knows for sure untl some research is done? Pavia is a complete mystery until such research is done. Perhaps unimportant to some potential owners? However, the Pavia plate is perhaps the original plate issued to this car as it dates from the first half of 1949. I'd guess that it might cost $200 - $250 to obtain copies of those early paper references that will tell all ... that is official. There will undoubtedly be some secrets that remain?
