I will be answering questions during the auction.\r\n\r\nFor a little background, we purchased this vehicle years ago from the original owner, a family friend who has since passed away. As the story goes, he heard GM was \"downsizing\" for 1977, and wanted the bigger 1976 wagon. He and his wife had no children - but did have a restored Pierce Arrow (1908 I think). So the wagon was purchased to tow the Pierce to car shows. To be clear, we have never towed anything with it during our ownership, but we have the tow hitch which is included in the auction. \r\n\r\nThe original owner went to the local dealer and custom ordered the vehicle. First up, woodgrain-delete, since he was worried about how the fake wood would age over the years. He claimed that the car had a custom factory paint job - as the story goes, the car came standard with the darker tan over the lighter tan, but his wife wanted it the other way around, so the car was ordered to the wife's liking. \r\n\r\nAnother great story about this car - when they picked the car up at the dealer, they determined the vinyl seat was too \"cold.\" So they had a custom made sheepskin seat cover made for the front seat. This seat cover has been on the front seat from 1976 until I took the pictures for the auction. Given that the original owner had no children, the second and third seats had almost no use. Between the front seat cover and the lack of passengers, it brings new meaning to the phrase \"noone ever sat on those seats.\"\r\n\r\nSpeaking of the third seat, when we bought the wagon from the original owner, he told me that he actually did not order the wagon with a third seat, since it was an extra expense and he knew he would never use it. But when he went to pick up the wagon at the dealer - the third seat had been installed by the factory. He theorized the factory had extra third seats and put them in regardless just to get rid of them. \r\n\r\nThe power tailgate is American engineering at its absolute best. It works great. It comes with a replacement rubber seal that my dad bought years ago. It also comes with a replacement set of taillights I bought a number of years ago - just in case. The replacement taillights are not NOS, they are off of another vehicle but they are in pretty good shape. Again, just in case.\r\n\r\nThe wagon has always been garaged and it shows. It is a lot of fun to drive and attracts a great deal of attention anytime we have shown it. Backing it up is no joke, its a big ride.\r\n\r\nPaperwork is pictured, including the original window sticker and the build sheet.\r\n\r\nMy dad is the driver in the video. \r\n\r\nI'll try to keep on top of any questions. It seems the honeymoon may be over now that he and Prudence from Produce have tied the knot and settled in to the \u2018normal routine\u2019.\r\n\r\nAh, young love.\r\n\r\nHe\u2019s just about to get in to the grittier details when a Light Buckskin and Bavarian Cream \u201976 Pontiac Grand Safari pulls into the Rusty Hammer Hardware Store across the street. That kicks in Chad\u2019s ADD and he\u2019s on to another topic.\r\n\r\n\u201cI had a chemistry professor at San Marcos State who had a Safari station wagon exactly like that one. I would have failed his class if I hadn\u2019t squeezed out an \u2018A\u2019 on the final.\u201d he tells me. \u201cWell, that and helping him carry beakers and Bunsen burners out to the back of the wagon a few times a week.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cI don\u2019t have many students who are failing my class that are able to get an \u2018A\u2019 on the final. How\u2019d you do it?\u201d I inquired.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe Bonus Question at the end of the test: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? I knew most of the class would take the easy way out with some run of the mill theory he\u2019d taught.\u201d Chad explained.\r\n\r\n\u201cBut not you?\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cHeck no. I learned more in my writing class than in Chemistry.\u201d he said.\r\n\r\n\u201cMost do.\u201d I volunteered. \u201cWhat did you come up with?\u201d And off he went.\r\n\r\n\u201cFirst we need to determine if the mass of Hell is changing. What is the rate at which souls are entering? Do any ever leave? We can assume more are being added daily, but none ever exit.\r\n\r\nNow, examine the major religions of the world.\r\n\r\nMost believe that if you do not believe as they do, you\u2019ll go to Hell. This tells us that the vast majority of people will go to Hell, causing its population to be constantly expanding.\r\n\r\nNow consider that Boyle\u2019s Law tells us that for temperature and pressure to remain constant, the volume of Hell must expand proportionally as each new soul is added.\u201d Chad explained.\r\n\r\nDespite the coffee, my eyes began to glaze over. However, Chad is not done.\r\n\r\n\u201cThis leaves us with only two possible outcomes:\r\n\r\n1. If Hell is expanding at a rate that is slower than that at which souls are entering, the pressure will increase until all Hell breaks loose.\r\n\r\n2. If Hell is expanding faster than the population of souls being added, then both pressure and temperature will drop until Hell freezes over.\r\n\r\nSo which must it be?\u201d Chad continues.\r\n\r\n\u201cIs there an end to this?\u201d I beg.\r\n\r\n\u201cIf we accept the theory given to me by the girl sitting next to me at the beginning of the semester that it would be a cold day in Hell before she would ever sleep with me, and take into account that I slept with her last night, then Number Two must be true.\r\n\r\nThe corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, Heaven is now all that exists, proving the existence of a divine being, which can be confirmed by the fact that last night my sweet classmate kept proclaiming, \u2018Oh my God\u2019.\u201d \r\n\r\nChad leans back in his chair, fingers locked behind his head.\r\n\r\nI am left wondering how Chad can be only a checker at the Piggly Wiggly. The success of the downsized wagons from 1977 and the second gas crisis in 1979 helped speed up their demise. By the early 80s, you could pick one of these up with less than 100k miles for $500, if that. But in his mind, that was the reason his wagon was not exactly made to his order - perhaps the factory had run out of some options, and had others to get rid of (the third seat.) \r\n \r\nAs he told the story to me, when the original owner ordered the car at the dealership, he specified that he wanted power windows (along with the special paint job, air conditioning, the tow package, etc.) The dealer called him a few weeks later to let him know his new wagon was ready for pickup. He went down to the dealership to get it, and noticed that it had roll up windows, not power windows. The Europeans and Japanese had quickly retooled and brought in reliable, sporty, well made cars with more practical size and fuel efficiency and promptly walked away with the American market. This car, is a Totem to the failed American auto industry that at this point was the most successful and profitable in the world. Funny thing is, after all these years, and all the government handouts (they should have all been allowed to go bankrupt so we would have better car companies today) they still haven't recovered from that body slam of the 70's. I think it had 92,000 miles on it.\r\n\r\nAs as lowly A1C in the USAF SOF community, the $500 price and the potential were just what I was looking for. Of course, all the proper performance parts for the Firebirds easily fit under the hood of this car, and they arrived as my meager \"racing budget\" would allow. Spreadbore Holley 800 double-pumper with mechanical secondaries. A three-angle valve job on those factory heads and Hooker Competition Headers with 2.5\" exhaust. I solved the over/under rear axle dilemma better than the factory (in my young opinion at the time), by having the exhaust exist right before the rear wheel on each side. For additional clearance and a slightly sportier stance, longer leaf spring shackles in the back added a couple of inches of rear bumper height. 235/60s and the factory turbine caps and it still looked very much like what Alice would use to take the Brady kids to the store. It was enough to take out some of the competition on which other young airmen were spending their first disposable incomes -- Lasers and Daytonas. T-Bird turbo coupes. I found the element of surprise was worth at least two seconds in the quarter -- \"My God, the guy in the wagon really is actually racing me.\"\r\n\r\nI am one of the reasons fewer of these exist -- one fewer, anyway. After returning to civilian life, and to settle a grudge match with a friend, who had just done a rear axle change on his Monte Carlo and dropped his quarter-mile time by 1.5 seconds, I \"El-Camino-ized\" the Safari. Tailgate and rear glass gone (the motor for them sits in the well under the spare tire). Rear doors and seats, gone. Interior carpeting and insulation, gone. Hood, gone. Rear windows removed and the roof cut at the base of the rear window pillars and from the top front point of the rear side windows across to a point in the middle of the roof, following the crease that exists there. We would have removed the entire top, but the retractors for the shoulder belts for the front bench seat (the only thing left inside except the dashboard) were mounted in the roof, and we felt removing those would be one step over the line regarding safety. And for the piece of resistance, as the French say, a Hills Bros coffee can with the ends cut off as a velocity stack on the Holley, with a long piece of thread to reach the higher flow, taller truck air cleaner sitting on top of it.\r\n\r\nThe 14s in a quarter aren't really impressive these days, I'll grant you. And the bog if you hit the secondaries before the revs were above 2000 RPM could be embarrassing, (rules of Physics regarding mass being what they are). But the car was fun, impressive for the amount of money that had been spent on it (next to none), and ugly as all get-out.\r\n\r\nI drove it in that condition until I got something a bit more economical -- a 1979 Dodge Magnum XE 360 with the Lean-Burn ignition. I failed miserably. I drifted that thing sideways in the wet, dry and snow. The maple tree incident was unfortunate, as the tree lost (although the left front bumper was never the same, but I did get to kiss Martha W that night, so the night was a net win for me!).\r\n\r\nI recall jumping the car many times (you could get long air at about 60mph where Buttonwillow and Warren Rd crossed), and recall once, attempting a personal best, landing the front frame HARD into the pavement. Of course, on Strange St., we all jumped cars over the level crossing. Good times.....\r\n\r\nFun story. In 1985 I did my 3-day formula car racing school at Mosport. Took the Catalina. Upon \"graduation\" we all took off in our street cars at a high rate of speed, in the rain. There is a lovely S-bend as you approach RR 57, which i went thru in a lurid slide. Lost it, backwards, through about 7 of those wooden posts (no wire), slid about 15 feet down the embankment into the ditch. Fortunately, no trees, just weeds, so nailed it and eventually got it almost to the shoulder, but w/o Posi I just couldn't climb the grade of the shoulder. Got a strap-pull from a guy in an Olds, flipped him $20. When I finally had a chance to look at the damage, I couldn't find any!. The wooden posts were rotten, you could have pushed them over with your hand. Drove home to Kitchener, stopped at a car wash to get rid of the muck. I had got away with it!!!\r\n\r\nA couple days later at dinner, Dad says \"What the hell did you do to the car???\". Feigning ignorance, i just looked at him, dumbfounded. He than says \"Where the hell were you driving? The hubcaps are full of mud and crap\".
