So as requested by so many... ...here is what my friends at Porsche, others and two of the best books have to share on these rare machines...\r\n\r\nIt was hardly a secret that beginning in the early 1980s, so long as you knew who to ask and how to ask for it and where willing to pay some hefty premiums, Porsche\u2019s \u201cSpecial Wish\u201d Department was willing to provide an improved performance version of their mighty 930 Turbo.\r\n\r\nAs early as 1981, Porsche began providing European clients directly a special optional engine upgrade that boosted output of the standard 3.3-liter engine from 300bhp to 330bhp. This involved the fitting of a special intercooler, turbocharger and waste-gate system as well as revised engine timing, camshaft timing and fuel-injection upgrades. Only a handful of such Factory modified Turbos are known to exist, but requests and interest grew sufficiently that sometime in 1985, an actual full option package was created usually known under the initials \u201cWLS\u201d which was derived from the German word; \u201cWerksleistungssteigerung\u201d which literally translates to \u201cFactory Power Increase.\u201d During the transition from the old \u201cSpecial Wish\u201d program to the dedicated \u201cPORSCHE EXCLUSIV\u201d production Department, the option became formally known as the \"Special Turbo Powerkit 330bhp\" (engine code 930.66S/SL)\r\n\r\nAt a minimum the follow three options needed to be required and paid for dearly by the perspective new owner as these instantly jumped the price of the car to near twice that of a stock model:\r\n\r\n-09981\tVehicle transfered to VRS for the installation of \"Exclusive\u201d parts\r\n-09991\tManufactured for the Exclusive program\r\n-XE6 \tUpgraded Engine Powerkit 330bhp (engine code 930.66S/SL)\r\n\r\nMost of these vehicles however had many more special and unique features and the options checked off were usually quite numerous.\r\n\r\nBy 1989 Porsche had formally decided and made the decision to kill off the Turbo program in favor of their four and eight cylinder, front-engined, water cooled car. Porsche formally released details that their new 964 / 911 Models would be the last of the 911 line and there would be no Turbo offering, something they soon greatly regretted.\r\n\r\nThe hype surrounding the last of the mighty 930 Turbo models was real and it came at a time when the G50, five-speed gearbox had finally been introduced to the car.\r\n\r\nWhat happened next is the stuff of legends\u2026\r\n\r\nIn the Spring of 1989, Porsche\u2019s French Distributor and Paris Agent, Sonauto was keen to take advantage of the publicity surrounding the pending end of the Porsche 930 Turbo and knowing exactly what was available by special order through the \u201cPORSCHE EXCLUSIV\u201d department, the order for ten \u201cTURBO S\u201d models was initiated. \r\n\r\nIn February of 1989, Sonauto released the following statement:\r\n\r\n\u201cDear dealer,\r\n\r\nIn order to ceremonially mark the end of this legendary model and at the initiative of Sonauto, the Porsche Factory has proposed that we produce a special final series of ten 911 turbo Coupes. Ten - and no more!\"\r\n\r\nThe specification for these ten Turbo S models included the following statement on their options and features:\r\n\r\n-Special Black Paint\r\n-Full Leather Interior\r\n-Sunroof\r\n-Removal of the logo from the rear engine compartment lid\r\n-Performance boost to 330bhp\r\n-Front spoiler with oil cooling opening\r\n-Sports Suspension / Bilstein shock absorbers, lowered by 33mm at the front and 27mm at the rear\r\n-Rear track widening by 35mm\r\n-Sports Seats from the Porsche 959 with the color elements black/grey/light grey\r\n-Central console with built-in radio and two additional instruments (interior temperature and volt meter)\r\n-Hi-fi system with built-in Pioneer CD player\r\n\r\nAll ten of these original Turbo S models used a series of \u201cexception\u201d codes to indicate the special equipment and assembly of the vehicles. The starting point was option code \u201c09981\u201d and \u201c09991\u201d which diverted the cars from the production line directly to the \u201cPORSCHE EXCLUSIV\u201d department for hand assembly and painting. There are a lot of misconceptions related to these special option codes. I realize the BaT narrative above lacks many of the details. We all know they are just meant as a start. \r\n\r\nI will try and share a bit more on how this car came to be and came to us... ...more tomorrow... ...I really need to finish up work on the others we have going live shortly...\r\n\r\nIt all started with this Porsche being removed from the production line and sent to the Porsche EXCLUSIV department along with the other nine in February of 1989. The Porsche records and correspondences indicate while identified as the 7th of the ten competed, it was actually the first one to undergo assembly as the pilot line vehicle of the small production run.\r\n\r\nIt was completed on May 22nd, 1989 and sold new to the Japanese collector and well known industrialist, Mr. Katsuaki Watanabe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Toyota Motor Corporation. \r\n\r\nThe car was then sent to Ruf Automobile GmbH, Pfaffenhausen Germany for updates similar to the RUF BTR but unique in that the only components installed were:\r\n\r\n-RUF Gauges\r\n-RUF Steering Wheel\r\n-RUF Cockpit Controlled Analog Boost Control\r\n-RUF Modified Injection System with \u201c7th\u201d Injector in the Intake Manifold for Full Enrichment at Full Throttle\r\n-RUF Typ. 930 - 4R Exhaust Sytem\r\n\r\nUpon completion of the work, the car was delivered and road-registered the following year, in 1990 by Mr. Watanabe in Japan. He owned the car for two years before it was sold to the Japanese collector, Mr. Matsuda.\r\n \r\nMr. Matsuda owned the car and kept it for 25 years until finally selling it in 2016 when it went to the well known German Porsche collector, Armin Schmitt from Oberursel, Germany. Mr. Schmitt requested and received confirmation from RUF Automobile GmbH on September 26th, 2016 via a TUV certification record that they stated for the record that the car\u2019s updates and exhaust system were done by them in period and conformed to legal road-registration requirements of the German Government for 1988-1989 vehicles. \r\n\r\nMr. Schmitt never registered the car and sold it a year later to another Porsche collector, Dr. Christian Sch\u00f6ning from Solingen Germany. The third and final owner in Germany was Mr. Siegfried Lapawa from Langerfeld, Germany. Porsche also used .8 bar on the Turbo S and WLS models for an output of 330bhb On the original RUF BTR they used 1 bar of boost to achieve 360bhp but this was on an engine that they built out to 3.4-liters. \r\n\r\nI don\u2019t have a record on this one but the gauge has a maximum indiction mark of .9 bar and I would assume that this is the maximum suggested boost to keep the engine from coming apart at the seems. \r\n\r\nThe turbo waste gate acts as a safety valve so theoretically, you should not be able to over-boost the car but I suggest not trying. I wanted to clarify how these systems work; mechanical adjustment for boost has a time-honored tradition in 911s and was present in even the earliest racecars and even some prodution 930s in the 70s.\r\n\r\nOn conventional cars boost control works one of two ways: they either directly adjust the preload on the wastegate spring (very uncommon) or they bleed off compressor pressure before it gets to the wastegate pneumatic solenoid. In the latter case, this means fhe wastegate actuator sees less pressure than the compressor is actually making. This is achieved through a bleed-off valve, and the knob in the cabin turns a shaft that adjusts the needle in the valve. When closed, it does not bleed at all and the wastegate opens normally. As the valve opens, air can escape and the wastegate sees (relatively) lower pressure and opens more slowly.\r\n\r\nThe \u201crelatively\u201d part is why these systems can be finicky, and why one you open the valve at all you have to monitor that boost gauge closely. The rate of flow of the bleed valve depends on pressure differentials, so when ambient air changes the valve behaves differently. This is especially true in extreme temperatures or at altitude. So every time one ordered a WLS kit on their 930, they ended up with a 911 Turbo S model in 1986, 1987, 1988, and yes in 1989 too. \r\n\r\nThis is a 1 of 10 911 Turbo S ordered by one particular dealership, that is it and nothing more. The plaque on the dash and the extra \u2018S\u2019 added to the frunk VIN plate doesn\u2019t necessarily make it any rarer than any other 911 Turbo S produced that year. One of the biggest dealers ordered 10 of them, so of course Porsche felt the need to try to make their lot of 10 extra special, which is obviously why it got the plaque and the added \u2018S\u2019. The main sales pitch was not so much the new G50, Five-Speed gearbox, but the fact that there would be no follow on Turbo model and yes, the big emphasis at the time was that the new 964 would be the end of the line for the 911 and going forward, their 4 and 8-cylinder, water-cooled front engine designs would be their only offerings.\r\n\r\nPanic really set in for Porsche mid-1991 when they realized the new 964 still made up the bulk of their sales and offerings. \r\n\r\nThe decision to continue the 911 line also forced them to admit, a turbo charged model would need to be offered and that they had gravely mistaken their earlier marketing decision.\r\n\r\nThe problem was the new natural aspirated 3.6-liter engine was designed for efficiency, economy and for environmental reasons and the engineers could not quickly adopt it with a turbo charger. \r\n\r\nAs a stop gap measure, the late 1991 and 1992 964 Turbo models saw them using the same basic engine set up found in these special 3.3-liter Porsche Turbos. I believe some clarification is needed. These are quite unique but I agree these were all built under production code 930770. All 10 of these fall under the WLS classification. This is 10 of the 24 turbos imported to France in 89. These 10 Turbo S's were all imported to France by Sonauto and had the identical modifications made to each specifically for sale by them. The idea was to commemorate the end of the long run of the 930. The cost of a stock 930 was 614k franc's and the performance kit was an additional 870k franc's so more than the cost of the car.\r\n\r\nAll of the 10 cars had a different muffler so what is on the car was not how it was delivered. These started the turbo S run for many models and like the 92 TSL, 94TS and later cars it received polished narrower straighter quad exhaust pipes out either side. A special rear valance was installed to allow this.
