It's shorter than an extended cab pick up truck, 16' bumper to bumper.\n\nGuys, I have a fleet of these British CVRT vehicles, as well as the \"wheeled\" CVRW FOX version. The Fox and this Sabre share the same engine, and the same turret/ 30mm Rarden cannon. I drive the Fox, and Sultan all the time, and my daughter doesn't favor the Sabre as much as the others, so we decided to let it go.. I have some other vehicles for the collection coming in from Europe now, and needed space... Plus, considering that \"preppers\" who didn't prioritize buying their tank before all the craziness happened, still need one, I figured it was prime time to toss this one on BaT and have some fun. \nActually, this isn't true, because we scheduled this one to sell on BaT back during the winter. Things just kind of happened :-)\n\nIt should make for some interesting chats with everyone sitting at home :-)\n\nThat said, I am finishing a video of the Sabre today. My daughter and I will be taking it on a 15 mile loop of the neighborhood later today while we shoot the video. I will try to get it edited over the weekend. I will include tearing down a couple of trees in the video, too.\n\nThis one was recommissioned in 2018 by Rob Dove, a CVRT specialist in the UK. I have a list of the items that he did to the vehicle, and will post those in some comments later. I have photos of his work to also add to the listing as well.\n\nHappy to help you guys understand and learn more about the CVRT family of light reconnaissance vehicles. This Sabre is one of the best tracked vehicles to own, it is light enough to be hauled easily, small enough to be stored easily, and parts availability isn't a problem. \nThe Jaguar B60 engine really pushes the vehicle, and I cruise it at 45-50MPH on the road without issue. @Richard_Gaffey she drives great on the road, the faster you go, the less steering input that's required. \n\nAfter a while owning the vehicles, they kind of become normal. I have done a good bit of tuning to this J60 to help it be optimized for US gasoline, and it is much faster than it was when I got it. The Sabre was below 1/4 tank of fuel, and was totally empty. the trailer is a PJ which is also a little lighter than most others. I am very (scary) close to 26K when hauling my Sultan on the same trailer, with the same rig. The Sabre is a little lighter.\n\nI avoid sharp turns on the blacktop completely, no matter track condition. When shooting the video I will show the road where I have made a sharp turn to prove these are not currently scarring the road. I have learned thus far that running the track tension too loose dramatically reduced rubber cleat life on the road.\n\nIn regard to tracks, and costs. Last year I bought a set of tracks for my CVRT Sultan (same track for those that don't know). I drive it on the road a lot, and since its a people mover that we are building into an overland camper, new tracks were needed. I bought 100 track links for 2,600 pounds, and picked up an additional 75 track links for 1,500.00 that were already in the USA. This gave me more than enough track links to re- do the tracks on the Sultan, with some spares. I can do the track swap myself, so there's no labor on that, just some time. \nI think 10K to buy tracks at retail, and pay for install is about right if you have to import them. Deals can be found in the community, if you wait long enough.\n\nI am currently taking my old tracks from the Sultan, and developing another method of re-cleating them using high density material that is not natural rubber. We just completed the durometer testing of the first few links, and its time to give them a try very soon. I will probably have to change the density a few times to get it right. \nThere's more than one way to skin a cat, and I am known for creating unique substitutions for OEM components. CVRTs are no different. \nAt the end of the day, its not cheap to own one of these vehicles, and it isn't supposed to be. At the same time, these pieces of armour are the cheapest that I have owned thus far, and the parts for them are the easiest to find. As an example, on my Fox (same J60 engine) I omitted all the military ignition, and fit a modern electronic ignition, among other things, like spark plugs and etc that were for the E type Jag. This stuff is used for airbag doors, because it's so tough at \n- 40F that it doesn't turn into shrapnel when a bag door in the dash is blown out from its tear seam - the door stays attached as one piece. We molded this material often at our Troy Mich. facility set up to develop new applications for the auto industry. I've tried cutting this material with a brand new razor knife, and you cant get thru a 1/8 thick plaque with a single cut. Hytrel has to be injection molded but any plastics shop in the US can mold it. It rivals urethane plastic for toughness and wear resistance. But urethane is another material you might want to try. GM even used Hytrel in some rear suspension links, but I can't tell you exactly when & where in what vehicle - contact Dupont's lab, which I think just moved to Auburn Hills Mi. \n\nUrethane is often used for transfer buckets on conveyors in gravel pits and other mining-type operations, for its extreme wear resistance and toughness. You could try both materials and see which is better for track soles. Urethanes are often castable like epoxy, which can make for cheap molding, but you'd want to contact urethane suppliers to get the best start on substitutes. \n\niMy entire 35 yr career was with Dupont Automotive Polymers, working with most of the world's car co's. Was involved in introducing the first all glass-reinforced nylon intake manifolds on engines, taking up to 10 lbs out of a truck with a single part conversion from cast aluminum. Those conversions cut weight drastically, eliminated all machining, no need for anticorrosion coatings, and gave most engines free extra HP due to the much smoother air runners vs sandcast metal. Also reduced hot restart problems as all injectors are insulated from engine heat far better than metal manifolds. Oh, and part cost was probably halved for the car co. \n\nPorsche actually started these conversions in 1972, on the 911. I brought examples to Detroit in 1984, to show how far ahead of us Europe was in FI and engineering plastics technology. By the time manifolds started being converted here, Europe had had them for 20+ yrs already. I just finished reading all 156 comments. Let me add some knowledge here.\n\nCVR(T) stands for Combat Vehicle Reconnaisance (Tracked). The first version was the FV101 Scorpian. It was armed with a 76mm gun. The Sultan has a higher roof as it was/is a Command vehicle. The Scimitar was very similar to the Sabre as it too, mounted the 30mm cannon. The Samson was a recovery vehicle. The Striker carried anti-tank missles. And the Samaritan was an ambulance. As you can see, typical British use of \"S\" as the main theme. They started building these in 1971. Entered service in 1972. Many were exported around the world. Total production was almost 3,000 of all types. The reason for the date disparity is the Sabre version with the 30mm cannon didn't happen until 1995. The turrets came off of retired Fox Amoured cars. CVR(W). I'm sure you can figure out what the W stands for. The Sabre was retired in 2004. One big advantage to being tracked, with the weight not being too high, CRV(T)'s actually had a lighter footprint than a human being. The tracks spread the weight out. The ones that were used in the Falklands could cross Argentine mine fields, and not set them off. I tried to find the pound per foot rating. No luck so far. As mentioned, these are pretty quick for an armoured vehicle. I found a 0 to 30mph time of 16 seconds. Not bad considering. These have a crew of 3. Driver, Gunner, and Commander. All in all, they were exactly what the British Army wanted in a Recce vehicle. The other design requirement was that it air portable. A C-130 could carry them. I think two at a time. The Transall C-160 could also carry them. In today's world, A Chinook could sling one underneath. Very versatile vehicle.\n\nOf course, no one NEEDS this. (If you do, we need to talk. He'd invite all the local constabulary and a pile of friends to Ponytrax Ranch for his own form of festival, fire up the Sherman & head for a Chrysler LeBaron or other Motown relic on his demo area, put a set of track tracks across it, then do a victory spin atop the pancake to the cheers of the crowd. He'd of course have his tank restoration guys remove the engine nugget first, so as to make the victim flatten better. \nIt was a sad occasion when he passed away at a young 59, but he'd made the most of his military vehicle passions before he left us. From building RC model tanks when a Stanford student which shot BBs and flame, he graduated to the real McCoy after his father passed, using a chunk of dad's leftover 2.7 billion to amass the largest collection in the world. \n\nThe local constabulary slowly got used to all sorts of massive stuff winding up the very steep and circuitous mountain road to reach the top of the 500 acre ranch. One day the local sheriff was called to the parking lot at the small strip mall at the road bottom to deal with a situation: The driver of a huge flatbed hauling a 50 or so ton tank, on freaking out at the thought of trying to take his rig to the mountaintop, had walked away from it and the shopping ctr mgr was trying to figure out what to do about this unwelcome guest. Sheriff took one look, called Jacques, asking \"can you drive this thing\"? Well, yes - so he comes down, backs it off the flatbed, and up the mountain they went! Don't know what the tracks did to the road, but it got up there easily. \n\nHis daughter Allison was more interested in his tanks than his sons, so he taught her how to drive the Sherman. To settle the question of how strong two phonebooks with interlaced pages were if one tried to pull them apart, the story was that while Jacques commandeered one of his rides, Allison drove the Sherman - both being chained to the interleaved phonebooks, which of course shredded with nary a whimper. Allison also rode in the turret of the Sherman as it carried his his casket to the mountaintop for burial in January 2009 while David, his engine guy, drove it to the top. \n\n\nThe most historic 80 or so of the 280 vehicles were given to the Collings foundation museum in Mass, which built an entirely new wing for them in a well planned diorama of the world wars and their hardware. The $10 million raised by sale of the remaining rides paid for transport of the others to their new home. \n\n\nJacques was a true engineer, and knew everything he had inside & out. When the Soviet Union fell apart, he gathered up all sorts of Russian stuff for peanuts as the thugs then in control sold off everything they got their hands on. Imagine buying a complete Scud missile launcher with missile for $50K! Demilled of course. Most interesting was the monster radar truck with a dish about 30 ft across. When i went to work for him his last year, he told me that rig put out so much power that the crew never lasted long, as they got microwaved during its operation due to its huge vacuum tubes power. Along my travels I have need up with a couple of pieces that were part of the liquidation after his death. The quality of all those vehicles were epic.\r\nI had a couple of emailed questions last night. I'll answer them here, too.\r\n-Where do you find parts?\r\nA: With the exception of the transmission filter, everything needed for a normal oil service can be bought locally. This goes for the engine, gearbox, final drives, and hubs. 30Wt engine oil is used for the majority of the vehicle, and 90wt is used for the rest. \r\nMost tune up parts can be found at Khaki Imports, or REME Depot here in the USA. They have ignition parts, carb rebuild kits, belts and etc in stock at good prices. If you need more parts, or want to bring a lot in a one time, both Bannisters, and Marcus Glen in the UK have loads of these things. I only buy bigger items from them, like road wheels, and etc. I recently had to replace the generator on my Fox, which I bought from Marcus Glen, as an example.\r\n\r\n-What special tools are needed to service the Sabre?\r\nA: I haven't needed any special tools yet. This isn't just for my Sabre, but it pertains to all my CVRT/ CVRW experiences. A selection of metric and SAE wrenches, and sockets are all that's needed, along with some large adjustable/ pipe wrenches for removing the hoses for the oil, and cooling system. The hubs use a hex (Allen) socket head plug. \r\n\r\n-Shipping? How am I going to get this thing home?\r\nA: Easy! www.specialtyvehicletransport.net has a list of haulers to choose from who specialize in larger/ heavier pieces like this. I got the latter running fine, but accidentally blew up the engine when on restart, the throttle stuck wide open, seized a rod, and spit rod & piston thru an 8 in. hole in the aluminum block. That was a bad day and another story. \r\n\r\nI first emailed him when I heard he had a super rare Panhard reconnaisance vehicle - called an EBR - with cockpits at front & rear - for hasty retreats without having to turn around! Also mounted a small gun and had retractable steel tractor wheels for going offroad, but capable of 60 mph on its rubber donuts. I wanted to help him work on it so I could see the 6 flat-twin Panhard aircooled all rollerbearing engines that powered it under the floor - a FLAT 12 cyl. engine all connected together! When he heard I had Citroen experience re hydraulics, he said \"forget the tank, can you fix my 600?\" I found the problems a socalled MB expert in Menlo pk Ca. had failed to fix, and saved him about ten grand by not using MB original parts, and saving having to replace the $13,000 4 window control switch on driver's door - $6 worth of Orings and a special tool I made for extraction solved that leakage problem most likely caused by the MB mechanic when he reset the system relief pressure valve to 3700 psi, versus the book spec of 2700 - only one thousand PSI over the factory setting - which tends to blow seals! Removed one shim washer & pressure came down to book. \r\n\r\nAs I worked basically side by side with his two tank experts, David and Jason, I learned a lot about Jacques, his attitudes and knowledge, especially when he gave me the whole tour of the collection.\r\n\r\nHe explained a number of reasons for why the Germans lost the war, in spite of some of their overwhelming machines like the Panther. If I remember correctly, he said many German machinists/engineers felt they knew best re tolerances, and didn't stick to the house standard dimensions. This attitude evidently led to non-interchangeability of parts between tanks when it came to battlefield repairs: cannibalizing a damaged tank for parts for another one often didnt work! The machines had to be shipped by rail - being too heavy for any other method - back to the factory. Versus Shermans being interchangeable all day long. The overlapping bogy wheels on Panther tanks meant that, if an inner wheel was damaged as in running over a landmine, two outer wheels had to be removed to get to it, practically tripling the work/time involved - not good in a battlefield situation. \r\n\r\nOne day I went to the ranch, one of his TWO Scud missle launchers was driven out in the open so the US military could study it from satellite - presumably for recognition and accuracy determination of their cameras. Jacques had free access to most military bases to study their leftover vehicles and parts inventories. I sold him all the replacement engine parts I had brought back from France in my luggage after shipping a used, somewhat freeze-cracked B14 block (best one they had) from Depanoto's store somewhere near Lemans. All this occurred in Dec. '08, a few wks before Jacques died. As I hadn't been reimbursed for the parts, I sold them yrs later to the new owner post-auction, and he wanted me to help him rebuild the engine, but as often happens, his life got in the way, and it's still in pieces. \r\n\r\nInteresting bit was why the engine blew: Jacques and i had driven the car around Ponytrax several times prev. without any problems after I'd tuned the engine and changed the 80 yr old transmission oil, which came out like molasses in January in Michigan, not Ca. I had driven the car out of its barn onto the gravel to clean diff 90 wt which had seeped out of shrunken gaskets between the track axle flanges and brake backing plates due to sheer age when the new, more liquid 90 wt got to the axle bearings. The track segments being faced with rubber, I didn't want the oil to damage the facing, so took it out into the light so I could see where it was leaking and clean off the oil. When starting the engine to drive it back into the barn, I pumped the accelerator out of habit, forgetting that this ancient carb didn't have an accelerator pump. The engine caught, and in 2 seconds flat, went WOT - wide open throttle - then BANG, and no. 3 rod, lots of piston pieces and and an 8 inch diam chunk of the alum. crankcase cascaded onto the ground. I sat there stunned. \r\n\r\nI got off, looked into the engine, gathered the pieces, then wondered how the hell I was going to get it back in the barn at 6 pm being the only person around. Figured I'd crank it in on the starter in 1st gear. Turned the key, engine started as I hadn't turned off the ign. and drove in as tho nothing had happened! The crankcase hole was above the oil line, and nothing even came out the side! \r\n\r\nNext day I pulled the flathead monobloc off the crankcase, and found rods 2 and 4 wouldn't even rotate on their journals! They had oil, but once I had the crank out, I found it took 7 lbs of force to rotate them on the crank, they were that tight! And when I examined the thick bronze conrod shells from no. 3 destroyed rod, they were burned BLACK from friction. Seems some unknown idiot had put the engine together with zero clearance on rod 3 - the crank was perfect. Further, the rod bolts weren't rod bolts - just garden variety allen head bolts of less than half normal strength, as the allen hole reduced the cross section of the metal between head and shank! \r\n\r\nWhy did it go WOT? That's what caused the seizure - we'd never operated it at anywhere near that rpm, and it actually ran fine at low speed in spite of zero clearance since bronze and steel won't weld together with any oil between them. On disassembling the carb, I found it had a rotary valve of solid bronze inside a bronze case. But the valve's shafts were part of the valve, and they had worn down so they were a loose fit in the bronze case holes. When I had pumped the throttle while cranking, the engine caught, intake suction pulled the large diameter of the valve against its housing, and the return spring hadn't the strength to pull it shut against side friction when I lifted off the accelerator. That overspeed cooked no. 3 rod bearing and seized it solid. The rod bottom end was torn open by the seizure as one of the half strength bolts failed, and let stuff fly. Amazingly, all the bits came out the side, leaving the rest of the engine clean and it ran fine at low speed. \r\n\r\nFurther examination of the carnage showed that one rod had been prev. broken by losing one leg of the main rod stem. It was brazed back together, but never trued to circular! 3 of 4 rod bigends were out of round by up to .006 inch. The rods were all a mess. Only no. 1 would rotate smoothly with no drag on the crank, and this engine had a good oilpump feeding all journals - not just splash lubrication. Even the block was junk! I found one integral cylinder had a 2 in. long circumferential crack in the bore, an inch below the deck.\r\nThis was caused by having a stud overtorqued into its block hole, so that it jackscrewed the casting apart at the hole basel! Yet the engine made not a whimper until the throttle jammed. Though this was not the case with the periscopes, as they did belong to the vehicle (even the paint on them matched) they were not on the BOL, and were fair game for CBP.\r\nAgain, you learn not to ask \"why\", and just learn that you can't win with them, and let it go. The fault lies with the shipper in the UK that failed to list these on the BOL.\r\nI may know where she of these scopes can be bought, as someone reading this thread (who also owns CVRTs) sent me a message regarding this.\r\n\r\n@Jclarke5\r\nmileage is horrible. There's no blanket statement about the Sabre being \"street legal\", as easy state, and city/ county may have different rules about this. It will be up to the buyer to determine this, as well as acquire their own title, registration, and insurance. I will not be able to assist with this, other than providing the Bill of Sale, and import documents. \r\n\r\nOne good part is you are likely to find that there's nothing saying that you cannot register, and plate your \"tank\" for the street. This is because in your area, there's likely not been a situation that came upon where someone tried to do this, or when the laws were made, no one considered it. If it doesn't specifically say that you can't, then the gray area says that you can. Lots of fellow CVRT peers have also registered these for highway use in USA.\r\n\r\nThe insurance part is easy, I just make one phone call to Hagerty and get the insurance with a few pics of the vehicle, and where it will be stored. I had a harder time getting Hagerty to inspire my M2A1 Half- track, than my CVRT Sultan. \r\n\r\nAs far as the HOA, IF you are able to register this for the street, then its just another vehicle.
