The Series 1's all have the covered headlamps, slender fenders and the taillights and front signals were located above said bumpers. The last 4.2-litre engine and synchro 'box was introduced in 1965 and powered the Series 1 cars through 1967. There were some transitional cars now called Series 1-1/2 (and even 1-1/4) in late '67 and early '68 but from 1968 on the Series 2 came online with larger taillights and front directionals, now below the bumpers. Headlight covers were gone. The Series 3 cars were all powered by the V12 and were built on a longer wheelbase.\r\n\r\nAs the first and most \"pure\" of the breed, the early Series 1 cars bring the most money, although not as refined as the 4.2 models with all synchro gearbox, amongst hundreds of other details. Many prefer the Series 1 4.2 for many of the mechanical improvements, yet retaining the original design.\r\n\r\nThe Series 2 is a wonderful car as well, although the DOT started getting involved, forcing the adjustments to the original design that was mandated by new safety standards. These were better driving cars and easier to live with than the Series 1 but bring less money.\r\n\r\nThe Series 3 is the final evolution of the design, carrying the theme forward, with almost no mechanical parts in common with the earlier cars. While not as sought after as an early Series 1 by pure collectors, it's the most user-friendly, drivable, comfortable and safest of the range. And as those of us who love Jaguar E-Types and always wanted one and can now afford (and justify buying) one move into middle age, comfort and ease of operation becomes more important, and the Series 3 makes an ideal comfortable, reliable and beautiful classic daily driver. The soft lead hammer looks like a small sledge hammer -- the first time you try it you feel bad hitting it hard, but that is the requirement. To remount, just hit the opposite direction until tight. The centerlocks are impervious to the mallet. You actually need to replace the mallet after a lot of use as it can get deformed. From 68 on, the US forced Jaguar to abandon the cool looking ears with the absurd reason they could harm a pedestrian, (remember the DB Aston in Goldfinger that had the centerlock that would extend to chop tires?) for an octagonal center lock where you had to fit a tool over it to turn it. \r\n\r\nThe centerlock approach is very safe for keeping the wheels on and was faster to change than the US approach of lug nuts. But, the original key fob that came from the dealer is the classic circular red/gold growler medallion that says JAGUAR on the top, but on the bottom where it usually would say COVENTRY, it says XKE. I know that North American dealers used the XKE moniker, but that fob is the only place I, or any of the Jag club people I've showed it to, have ever seen XKE in writing on something from Jaguar. Maybe the dealer commissioned them? Jaguar put toolkits in the UK cars but not in the cars destined for the US (not sure about elsewhere). US buyers could buy the OEM toolkit from their dealer but they were expensive and from what I understand few ever did. I agree about the Voltage Regular, this one is a common aftermarket version that undoubtedly replaced the original B.U.T.E.C. unit. These replacements had more modern electronics so were a bit more reliable. By the way, the original B.U.T.E.C VRs can be rebuilt as it's most frequently the power transistor that fails which is a cheap part, still available, and not hard to replace. I know that because I've done it on mine. As to the knockoffs - both the wire wheels and the knockoffs were an evolution from racing. Back in the day wire wheels were lighter than solid steel wheels (this was before mags were developed) and the knockoffs allowed for much faster wheel changes in the Pits during a race.
