[{"id": 13878795, "authorName": "drbeemer (The Seller)", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/drbeemer/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "Seller Here, more about the '74 R90S: \r\n\r\n\u201cFIRSTS\u201d FOR THE R90S and 1974 R90S \u201cUNIQUE-NESSES\u201d\r\n\r\n\r\nThe R90S model came to market in 1973 as a 1974 model on the 50th Anniversary of BMW motorcycle production which started in 1923. \r\nIt changed the motorcycle world and the image of BMW motorcycles completely.\r\nIt is the first BMW motorcycle designed by a designer, HansA Muth, and his design is a magnificent achievement, still impressing observers today.\r\nIt has been said the R90S motorcycle is to BMW as the Gull Wing car is to Mercedes Benz.\r\nThe R90S almost did not see the light of day; Bob Lutz is considered the Father of the R90S, see the book \u201cBMW R90S\u201d by Ian Falloon, page 33.\r\nWhen the R90S finally made it to market, it saved the BMW motorcycle division from extinction.\r\n\r\n\u201cFIRSTS\u201d For the BMW R90S Model \r\n\r\nFirst BMW with exposed fork tubes, for visual appeal\r\nNo fork gaiters, for visual appeal\r\nNo stays in the front fender, for visual appeal\r\nSteering damper\r\nSeparate tach and speedo\r\n900 cc engine\r\nFactory fairing\r\nDual front disc brakes\r\nFive speed transmission (was a 4 speed)\r\nSmoked paint scheme; Tourist Trophy (TT) Silver Smoke only in 1974, Tourist Trophy Silver Smoke and Daytona Orange in \u201975 & \u201976. Tourist Trophy was for the Tourist Trophy races at the Isle of Man, Daytona Orange was meant to mimic the sunrise at Daytona Beach, Florida. \r\nIt is said that the TT Silver Smoke color is \u201celegant\u201d, and the Daytona Orange color is \u201cstunning\u201d.\r\nFirst cowling around the seat\r\nThe only BMW to have Dell\u2019Orto carburetors\r\nThe float bowls were polished\r\n\r\n\u201cUNIQUE\u201d to the 1974 R90S Versus Subsequent Model Years of 1975 and 1976\r\n\r\nHad an \u201c0\u201d for neutral indicator, later it was \u201cNEUTRAL\u201d\r\nHad five ignition key positions, later had three positions\r\nWhite ring around the speedo and tachometer\r\nAirbox to carb clamps not chromed\r\nKick starter standard\r\nThe center of some horns were chromed\r\nSolid front discs\r\nSteering damper\r\nSome had the two \u201cmystery holes\u201d in the bottom of the fairing (facilitated removing the headlight chrome bezel)\r\nMore chromed fasteners than later years (top and bottom of shocks, frame stiffener from rear subframe to near swingarm, etc.) This varies among each R90S.\r\nStripes were applied (as in wallpaper), not painted\r\nShiny swing arm plastic covers, they later had a rough surface\r\n/5 handlebar controls\r\nAluminum gas cap on early production units\r\nAluminum turn signal bodies\r\nMirror stalks slim and curved, very elegant\r\nSmaller diameter front axle\r\nVery early production had one front axle pinch bolt, not two\r\nLevers were elegantly curved and had finger detents; their anodizing turned \u201cpurple\u201d over time\r\nSeat was \u201csmooth\u201d, later had more indentations to prevent slipping\r\nChromed acorn nut on right rear lower shock mount\r\nNumerous \u201crunning\u201d internal changes came about in \u201975 & \u201976 that cannot be seen.\r\nNot all these \u201cvisuals\u201d were strictly for the \u201974 model because \u201crunning changes\u201d were the norm. \r\nAs parts were used up newer style parts were installed, sometimes randomly.\r\nThere is no such thing as \u201calways\u201d or \u201cnever\u201d in the R90S world. As soon as you say either, it always seems an exception pops up. Even when an original owner says, \u201cI picked up my R90S from the dealer, so I know mine is how it came from the factory.\u201d What about transit damage? Did the dealer alter the bike or fix a problem before turning it over to the original owner? Did the dealer swap parts to please or help another customer? Is your memory that good after 45 years? How many owners has your bike had?\r\nAfter the Superbike win at Daytona in 1976 on Daytona Orange bikes, it is documented that some customers had dealers take off their TT Silver Smoke parts and install Daytona Orange parts. So maybe your Daytona Orange bike was originally TT Silver Smoke? BMW might be able to verify that, but maybe not as some records have been lost.\r\nJust because the current \"official\" BMW parts fiche notes a particular part (Max BMW, etc.), that is NOT necessarily how BMW originally assembled any or all R90S models. There is a lot of variation in the parts fiches of today.\r\nBMW made numerous other running changes to the starter, alternator, transmission, front end, it really seems like everywhere. The \u201976 model is thought of as the best example since it had all the upgrades.\r\nTransmissions in the \u201974 model: \r\nNoted airhead specialist Oak Okleshen advised to swap out the 1974 transmission for a later year transmission due to its \u201cfirst year\u201d woes, however, many were repaired and continue in service.\r\nColors:\r\nWhen BMW employees first saw the Daytona Orange color, they referred to it derisively as \u201cegg yolk\u201d. It is amazing. Once you see this and understand it, you will see all R90S re-paints entirely differently since so few can duplicate the factory color. Unfortunately many re-paints end up being first, silver (correct), but then black to make the fade, and it looks ghastly, sorry.\r\nI am very grateful to the many folks who have educated me about the intricacies of the R90S, it is my favorite BMW model. Because of the history he agreed to two things in our transaction - that he could not ride it either and that I would get the right of first refusal one day, via handshake because he is that kind of person. \r\n\r\nHe still has the R90S. His collection has grown to well over 100 cars; perhaps a quarter are worth a million or more, but he\u2019s got lesser collectible ones that he just loves from all eras and brands \u2013 think vintage Ferrari\u2019s and modern sports cars that start at a million. I am quite sure I will never get this R90S back as he has two sons who drive and ride everything except this 1974.\r\n\r\nThis bike was originally purchased new in Baltimore by an aspiring attorney whose young wife said, \"you haven't even graduated law school yet, let alone gotten a job, and you're going to spend how much on a new BMW?\" She was right but he presented a compromise which she accepted - he bought the bike with his meager savings and agreed not to ride it until he graduated and had a solid job. Only then could he take it back to the dealership and get it set up to ride and enjoy it. \r\n\r\nAll that did happen, and he went on to do very impressive things in the legal profession locally and the world in general. Later as a judge and even headed up a team to establish a new legal system in another country following their success in becoming a democracy. \r\n\r\nBut he never rode the bike and neither did I or any of my technicians.
