The so-called \"fender humps\", probably the single most distinctive feature of the Javelin, was originally used in order to give the maximum clearance for changing tires when AMC was actually racing the Javelin. At about 110 to 120mph the car got real floaty and frankly was scary to drive. It may have been because it had been driven hard for all of its life. I wanted them to do well as they were the underdog, hometown guys. At the same time, they were behind the big 3 and it showed. Think Marlin. Sure it's cool to see one now but at the time they were not, very much like an Edsel in many ways.\nThe 1st generation Javelin and AMX were nicely designed and likable. The gen 2 Javelin took a little time for me but I wasn't pleased that the \"real\" AMX was gone. No disrespect but I don't believe those front fender humps were anything more than a styling trick to break up the long run of fender and those lines are repeated ever so slightly on the rear fenders. I don't see how those could help one change a tire. I got used to them.\nWhat I never cared for was the excessive front overhang. I used to wonder about that foot of nothing between the grille and the radiator. There may be a reason for it but it escapes me.\nThis is about the same time that the Mustang became larger and longer so AMC is not alone. Back in the summer of 1973, I was stationed at Ft. Dix N.J., undergoing AIT. I met up with a Sargent from my home town in Central Falls R.I. That I ended up becoming friends with and traveled back an forth with him on weekends all summer long. Who happened to own an AMX exactly like this one! But his was the second AMX he owned. The first AMX was a 1970, that he had built up with all kinds of aftermarket high performance parts, but was totaled by a dump truck rear ending it. So he bought a brand new one exactly like the 74 above, just before I met him. I ended up helping him transfer the engine from the older car into the new car, because it was a very strong engine and after we were finished you could not be able to tell just by looking at it! Matter of fact the dealer even replaced the starter under warranty! I\u2019m not sure what he had used and done to the older engine, but I was very powerful! Enough to help bury the speedo at will on the open road, plus leave two deep black burned rubber patches for at least 40\u2019! I had the opportunity to drive back one weekend, after he had tied one on at a picnic he was at just before we left and there was no way I was getting in the car with him driving! Between me and his girlfriend, we convinced him to let me drive, after ten minutes on the Interstate he was fast asleep for the whole trip! That AMX was a fast car! On the highway at the speed limits of the time 65-70 mph, it would get no more than 15 mpg! If you used the Cruise Control at 65, the best was 17 mpg! But if you hammered it at say 50 mph into passing gear you could almost see the gas gauge needle move!
