The car is registered for the street. That's one of the truly rare and great things about this car. It has a normal Title which makes it the only 1996-1999 factory built F355 Challenge with a Title from an authorized dealer (that I am aware of) and thus fully legal for road use. And this was NOT some finagled title. This is a fully legit title from Classic Coach, one of the most respected Ferrari race and service facilities in the United States. In fact, if you go to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, on display at the Museum is Classic Coach's F355CH. And the New Jersey title was signed over to me by none other than Onofrio Triarsi, which I find particularly significant and cool. Here's a little bio from the net about Onofrio Triarsi:\nAt the age of 13, at his mother's side, Onofrio Triarsi left Sicily, Italy, in pursuit of the American Dream. In the early 1970s, young Onofrio purchased a small piece of property in Elizabeth, New Jersey with a rickety, three-car wooden garage. His dream was up and running. It was here that Onofrio started doing the high-end automotive restoration and fabrication that would become renown for its quality; celebrated because of Onofrio\u2019s own fascination with the minutiae of this highly skilled work. Proper 355CH do not have headlight assemblies at all. They feature only a special cover that looks like a headlight but that is all it is-- a special headlight lid Ferrari made specially for the F355CH. This saves a lot of weight as the OEM headlights, buckets, motors, etc., add quite a bit of weight. That's why I have added two extra options here for the future owner: First, I purchased headlamp buckets for the 355 as well as other parts, and had these parts painted when the car was painted, so that if the new Owner wants to install headlights they have that option and the paint would match the car. The other option, which I would much prefer if I wanted to install headlights, is the projector beam headlights I have purchased new and that are included in the sale. These will fit inside the front bumper holes where the fog lights would normally be found on a 355. These projector beams have high and low beams and they are significantly more powerful than the standard Ferrari 355 headlights, modern light technology being that much better than that fitted to the Ferrari back in the 1990s. In one of the last photos there is a photo of the red F355CH from Classic Coach on display at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. In that picture you'll also see the projector beams and where they would fit on the F355CH bumper. Personally, I like the car the way it is now, but these options are available to the new Owner and the parts are shown in the photo gallery. The reason this car has a Title is it had the great fortune of being owned and looked over by the right shop (Classic Coach Racing) and the owner of Classic Coach Racing just so happens to own two factory-authorized Ferrari dealerships, Ferrari of Tampa and Ferrari of Central Florida. He also is a historical figure in Ferrari's history, as I noted in a prior comment. Thankfully, with Ferrari factory authorized dealerships, this Ferrari received a totally legit Title. So there was no process. Rather, this car was at the right place at the right time and in the care of the right people-- i.e., a Ferrari dealership owner. For background as to why all 1996-1999 Ferrari Challenge cars were sold with a Bill of Sale /Manufacturer Certificate of Origin and not a Title we can thank regulation changes. All post-1995 cars were to be OBD2. However, the Ferrari Challenge series mandated all cars be the same and as the series commenced in 1995 that meant the rules required the OBD1 cars\u2014which featured the more powerful dual intake system. So after 1996 when more Challenge cars were required to keep the race series going, Ferrari had to build them fully in house as they were building them OBD1. Ferrari then technically could not sell them with a Title because after 1996 they would have had to have been OBD2. So Ferrari\u2019s solution was to build the car entirely at the factory (where as 1995 Challenge cars were sold as standard Berlinettas and converted at dealerships) and sell them for race-only and thus without a title. I have also spoken to three prior owners, all of whom were professional gentleman, two of which are noted car collectors, and none indicated there was any crash or accident history with the car. In addition, I have gone over the car and see no indication of any crash or accident damage. When I purchased the car, and prior to painting the car, there was no accident damage apparent. I have looked over the car and see no signs of any accidents. For example, where the front fenders bolt on and the area around the windshield it looks like new and with no indication of any damage. Same around the door jambs and rear fenders. It should be noted that this Ferrari F355CH was produced towards the end of the F355CH production and by the time it hit the track the Challenge series had already been going for a few years and so it was not on the track when the series first began and I suspect by the time it did hit the track drivers were more experienced. Prior to that race Challenge racers were relatively short whereas I believe this race was a full hour. It was the first such endurance race in Ferrari Challenge history and this car won it. I guess that\u2019s somewhat historically significant. The Challenge series was a race for fun series and not a professional series so the results really depend more on the driver than the car. In fact, that was the entire point of the Challenge Series. The cars were all basically identical so it wasn\u2019t about who had the better car but who was the better driver. The Rules required all of the maintenance, service and race support come from factory authorized Ferrari dealers. I can share what I have learned from my research. In addition to winning the inaugural Endurance race at Homestead, Florida, this car finished 2nd at the Lime Rock Endurance race in 1998. That same year it finished 2nd at the Road Atlanta Endurance race as well. In addition, in the shorter races, it finished 5th at Lime Rock and 7th at Road Atlanta. As of the Pike\u2019s Peak race in late September 1998, this car was standing 5th overall, out of 30 contestants in the overall standings. The only other year of racing I can see is the car\u2019s first year (1997) with the new car and its driver getting acclimated to the series with a Sears Point finish of 14, Montreal 20, Lime Rock 12 and Las Vegas 8. I do know in later years the car was driven by Gentleman racers, including two collectors and during this time it is my understanding, the car remained with Classic Coach. Classic Coach would transport the Ferrari to the race track, provide track support, and then transport the Ferrari back to Classic Coach where it would be stored and serviced until the next race. I had obtained the information to answer this question back in 2016 with the Gentleman who helped create and run the Challenge series, David Seibert. I emailed David a few months or so ago but never heard back from him. Now I know why: I just learned today David passed away in July. I\u2019m feeling somewhat crushed at the moment. My conversations with him were wonderful as he was truly a Ferrari expert and had a true passion for these glorious old Ferraris. He told me stories about how Ferrari had changed over the years and how they\u2019d gone from a friendly family sort of business to a more corporate, less friendly company. One that ultimately replaced much of the old guard from the old days. David told me about how my car was produced. He told me how, after 1995, when the factory received an order for a 355 Challenge, how they would literally just pull a 355 Berlinetta off the assembly line and build a 355CH right there at the factory. It was very much a special production sort of car. To answer the BAT question, this is how and why my car has a late XR Vin number and an OBD1 engine: Ferrari would pull cars off the assembly line in, for example, 1997 and build a Challenge car to 1995 Challenge Car rule specifications so it could go racing. So when I say this Ferrari truly is a fully in-house factory built race car that could be driven on the Road and Track, this car truly marks the end the end of an era car. An era where you could drive your 250 TDF, SWB or GTO to the track, race and drive home. This car marks the end of that era. The last true dual purpose Ferrari\u2026.and one with the classic gated shifter! When I asked David if I could get more detailed information about the build process and my specific car he said not likely because back then Ferrari did not keep records the way they do today as things were much less formal back then. David was so much fun to talk to. I admit I was in awe of this man\u2019s life experiences with these cars. David passed away on July 7, 2020. He was an author for the book Ferrari 333SP. He was the creator of the Ferrari Challenge in North America and the Cavallino Classic Competition in Palm Beach, FL. He was a Ferrari historian. David was also the owner of what is one of my favorite Ferraris of all time: The Von Neumann Ferrari 625 TRC. David sold this car to Bruce Meyer. First, if this car had been imported into the United States as a regular GTB back in 1997 it would have gone through the normal importation process for vehicles intended for use on public roads and there would be a record of the car long before 2001 when this car was first titled by Classic Coach. Second, this car is a 1997 and it was already racing at events as early as May of 1997 (Sears Point, California) if not sooner in the year. Third, as I understand it, even cars with dealer installed kits from 1994/95 left Ferrari with work done that prepared them for dealership installing Challenge kit. For example, I believe the roll cage mounts were welded into the monocoque chassis in Italy and not at the local dealer. Yet this car clearly has proper factory welded roll bar mounts, etc. Fourth, there is also a realistic, pragmatic issue: A brand spanking new 355 Berlinetta was an expensive and much sought-after Ferrari back in 1997. This would be far more difficult and much more expensive job than just installing a kit in the older generation 1995, which would be far more logical. To a convert a new 1997 Berlinetta to an OBD1 355CH would require significant welding of roll cage mounting points, different wiring harnesses, different computers as the OBD2 cars use just one computer and OBD1 cars use two computers. The intake systems are totally different. The exhaust systems are entirely different. All of these parts are super expensive and all of this is in addition to the numerous other major changes that are required to convert a 355 to a full on F355CH. I don\u2019t know if the kits were even available any more by 1997 and unlike the original kits, the later Challenge cars were different and included, for example, the rather expensive and effective carbon fiber rear wing that was not available in 1995. Now if back in 1997 someone wanted a F355CH it would be far less expensive to simply buy one rather than buy a brand new F355 Berlinetta and convert it. And if someone was going to convert a car the logical choice would have been a used 1995 355 and much cheaper than a new 1997 F355B while the 1995 355 would have been OBD1 from the factory. Lastly, there is no documentation whatsoever that indicates such an illogical thing was done as to convert a brand new OBD2 1997 F355B to an OBD1 1997 F355CH. These cars were beautiful, sounded amazing, and gave a real driving experience and its no wonder these cars are some of the most desirable, and in fact, the most desirable Ferraris of all time. Pure race-only cars are great, but you need a crew, a trailer and its simply not the same relatable experience as driving one of these cars. Which brings me to this car. This dual purpose F355CH is the grandchild and the truly last heir to these magnificent Ferraris. \r\nFact: The F355CH is the last dual-purpose Ferrari race car EVER BUILT AND EVER TO BE BUILT BY FERRARI! The car is so confidence inspiring in turns and fast turns are no doubt helped by the rear wing. I remember approaching a particularly fast left hand turn (where PCH becomes the 10 freeway) and I was entering at speed with a GT3 shadowing me. I went in really fast, too fast I thought, but the car was so neutral I realized I hadn't even approached the car's limit, and I'll never forget the GT3 driver's shocked face as we were nearly side by side on this two lane road and he had to pull in behind me in the turn. A regular F355 could not have done what this F355CH did with apparent ease. As it states in the listing description above, \" A timing belt service was performed two years ago\" and an Invoice is shown in the gallery. \r\n\r\nThe reality is this car is simply and by far the best condition F355CH I have ever seen, and for that matter, its condition is better than any regular F355 I have seen because it is largely what I would call a restored car, what with the engine out service and detailing of the drivetrain, suspension detailing, fitment of new brake cooling hoses, fitment of H&R springs suitable for dual purpose road and track use, an interior that looks like a new car with new leather, new Challenge seat covers purchased directly from OMP in Italy, an original steering wheel in good condition with a new steering wheel included as well, with wheels refinished, new Pirelli Trofeo tires with ~300 miles on them, new paint that is better than original with use of the classic Giallo formula as used on the 246 Dino, 275 and Daytona, carbon fiber door sills, upgrading of brake lights, tail lights, reverse lights and interior lights to more efficient and cooler running LED lights, new battery, etc. \r\n\r\nBasically the exterior looks like new. The drivetrain and undercarriage are detailed and look like a car that's practically new. In fact, I would say the interior looks better than new. \r\n\r\nNot only do things like door jamb lights work as they should (better with LED lights) as well as the interior lights (typically not working on Challenge cars and often times not working on even regular F355), but the rear leather trim was refinished better than new, as I shown in the photos I will attach here. In one you see a gaping hole (this is from the car that looked like it was ready for a restoration and that sold for $120k here on BAT a few weeks ago). The other photo is from my car. Note how my car does not have a gaping whole around the roll bar mount but rather is nicely tailored. \r\n\r\nAs noted in the listing, when the car was repainted a new windshield was installed. Ferrari F355s that are now nearly a quarter century old, and particularly Challenge cars that were on the track, have windshields that no longer look new but have signs of pitting, etc. This car has a new and proper windshield, so when you are driving your visibility is as though you are driving a new car. \r\n\r\nI don't believe my car needs anything mechanical or cosmetic. Nothing I am aware of. I am really OCD which is why my car looks the way it does. \r\n\r\nAs for the service, realistically it should be done every 5-7 years, so this car won't need another belt service for at least three more years. Service items, such as air filters, fuel filters, belts, etc., are all the same as regular F355s and the procedure to service the car is the same. \r\n\r\nAlso, this car has new brake discs all around as confirmed in receipts and with a measuring caliper so this car won't be needing brake discs. Brake pads are also at near new levels of thickness. \r\n\r\nSimply put, if there is a better F355 or F355 Challenge out there, I have not seen it. Add to this the fact that this F355 Challenge has a proper title from a Ferrari dealer and is currently registered for street use and is in fact used on the street, and that this is the car that won the very first endurance Challenge race in the history of the Ferrari Challenge series, and is among the very last Challenge cars ever built, and is a fully factory built race car\u2014the very last of the manual gearbox, true dual purpose road and track cars, ever to be built by Ferrari, and we have a historically significant unicorn of a Ferrari.\r\n\r\nPlease note the photos: One shows the roll bar mounting area on the F355CH that sold, without a title for $120k on 10-5-20. I met and had the opportunity to speak with Paul Newman a few years before he passed away. It was quite an experience! I purchased this Ferrari about five years after Paul passed away. I suspect even if he had been alive at the time he would not remember the VIN of the F355CH he drove that day. I have tried to prove or disprove this is the car Paul Newman drove and I have not been able to prove this conclusively, one way or another. \r\nThe reason the Robb Report livery was put on this Ferrari was because it was my belief that this car was in fact the car driven by Paul Newman at Lime Rock. I have spoken to the folks at the Robb Report directly and they could not say for sure. I have spoken to the folks over at Classic Coach and they could not say for sure. I spoke to David Seibert, the gentleman credited with starting the Challenge Series, and he could not say for sure. David told me records were not kept of these things back then the way they are today. I do know from the history that this car does not appear to have been campaigned in 1999 when the event at Lime Rock took place and as such it would have been available for guest drivers at the Lime Rock event. \r\nI also know Classic Coach has a long-standing relationship with Ferrari North America and would likely have been the nearest race shop to bring a F355CH to Lime Rock. In fact, Ferrari North America is located just 25 miles south of Classic Coach and Classic Coach is just 98 miles from Lime Rock.\r\nInterestingly as well, the records then show the Gentleman who owned the Ferrari lived near Paul Newman. \r\nI can state that to date no one has shown me any proof this was not the car Newman drove that day. I have heard chat on the internet that someone claims they own the car. But such claims are easy to make and so far I have not seen any proof, one way or the other. Without 100 percent proof I don\u2019t and won\u2019t this was the car Paul Newman drove. (New brake duct hose, LED lights, etc. I have followed the market for years and I can say this is the best F355CH offered for a public sale, period. In fact, its condition is better than most any F355 I've seen, including the GTS that sold here for $160k and Ferrari produced 2,048 six speed manual GTS....Ferrari only made 108 F355CH and this is the only one known with a Title from a dealer....and only one I know of restored to this level. Better condition and lower miles than the GTS as well! Easily should be a $200k car. It was lovely to see! Yet at the same time, makes me wonder how a Ford....with an ecoboost V6, could ever be worth that kind of money while the car is only two years old. I saw the video of the car being driven......and had to share this video of driving the F355CH through the canyon at just 7/10ths. You decide. Which looks like more fun?
