Rode it to Utah from Vermont, blew it up at Bonneville, rode almost to Hudson Bay and up a 14,000 foot mountain in Colorado with no roads whatsoever and 100lbs of gear on the back. Rode through a tornado in Missouri at night with no headlight or taillight for 100 miles in 60mph wind bc my alternator detonated by following Semi taillights. I've ridden the windy mountain roads of Boulder with one girl on tank and one on the seat in perfect comfort. Check the valves every 3,000 miles and keep it at 80 and it will go over 500k miles on the original crank. Don't try to hit 110, it can get close but on the SWB it's about as safe as doing speedball due to the legendary deadly speed wobbles. It lane splits a lot better than you would think, and it's good to practice it because the brakes are not to be trusted. Brazil was my next target destination but it looks like it might have to be on the next one. Wish I had my insurance payout, I would be bidding like mad on this.\r\n\r\nI was on Timothy Leary in the Utah desert at a Subway sandwich whose decor was a multitude of taxidermied animals, trying to attach my right muffler when an old dutch guy rolled up in a pickup truck with a tyrol hat on and said to me\r\n\"I'll never forget the sound of that engine.\"\r\nWhy? I asked him\r\n\"It's the sound the germans made when they came for my family in 1940\" \r\nhe said and pulled up his sleeve exposing a wrinkled number tattoo. I have owned my 1971 R75 for 23 years and have put many miles on it. My bike has over 100K miles and it runs like new. I purchased it as a rolling parts bike, but it was easy to rebuild. Everything on the bike is high quality and of thoughtful design. I put a /6 five speed transmission and rear drive in mine. The later transmission/rear drive combination is less kluky than the 4 speeds and give the bike better highway ability. It's a bolt in swap.\n\nThese bikes are smooth as silk and have beautiful handling qualities. The front drum brakes are superior to the disc brakes on my early CB750. \n\nSomeone has spent a lot of time restoring and polishing this pretty bike. The buyer can't go wrong with this R75. When I was young, these boxers looked weird to me. I couldn't imagine owning one. But the beauty of these bikes grows on the owner over time. If not, what's your secret? Do you have the mirror and, if not, are the threads (in the housing) to accept the mirror stem in good shape? I can't tell if the rust on some of the spokes is superficial or deeper. Will they clean up easily? Also, how old are the tires (there will be a date stamp on the sidewall)? Do you know the manufacturer of the newer /6 style mufflers if it is not BMW? Have the tranny splines been lubed since the bike came out of hibernation? Lastly, l am curious why the effort hasn't been made to fully tune and adjust the carbs since the effort was made to rebuild them? The carbs on this bike (64/32/3 and 4) were, many times, substandard due to problems Bing had in their design and manufacture (do a search for Snowbum BMW Carburetors for the full lengthy story, including possible fixes). It would set my mind at ease, as a potential bidder, to know that l don't have to deal with a possibly complicated or expensive fix to rectify the problem. So the non polished items were cleaned and painted with the original bmw paint that i got from capital cycle. I do not have the mirror but the threads are in excellent condition and one can be easily installed. the spokes are in great condition I did clean them pretty extensive but they aren't as new but look great. the Rims are very nice . The tires are 2 years old . They are Michelin . I do not know the manufacture of the exhaust pipes. they are in great condition. I did buy new headers and polished the mufflers and it all looks excellent. As for the transmission it shifts fine with no issues. I did change the fluid . Lastly for the carbs. They were completely rebuilt . The bike starts with ease and runs well. I would recommend the new owner having them Synchronized . I knew i was going to sell the bike every region is different with elevation etc. So it's something I just left for the new owner to dial it in depending on where the bike ends up. When i did the Start up video i started it cold. It hasn't been fired up in weeks and she fired right up and idled with ease. once she warms up in a few minutes its good to go. Hope this helps. .
