Performing the swap really only requires the hood, grille, and headlights. \r\n\r\nSince this is a GTI it also required the Jetta headlight harnesses. GTIs got two-chamber lights, while the base Golf and all Jettas had single chamber headlights.\r\n\r\nThe mechanical modifications really look top notch. Not crazy power, but it should be significantly quicker than stock. The transmission/diff setup alone is drool-worthy stuff. \r\n\r\nI owned a Mk.III from 2003-2013, and worked for German Auto Parts for much of that. On its left was an Alpina in the process of wholesale restoration- custom pistons had to be manufactured; there was a donor car under cover outside, and a back wall half buried in boxes of parts. On the other side was an M5, perfect in every respect. The walls had various magazine articles showing the cars Roy has owned and restored. It was a vision of car heaven. The seller is a gentleman in the best sense of the word. The Golf is a thoroughly sorted car. Done, done, done. Roy mentioned the color difference in the front clip. I am going to say the difference was about 1%. Maybe. No bondo. No filler. A suggestion paint work was done over a back window that doesn't show when metered. Cosmetically the car is excellent, inside and out. Better than my 2013 GolfR. Roy took us for a drive, kids in back. The motor has a big personality, but you can still carry on a conversation. The exhaust note is only part of the equation- you really hear the motor working. There's a bit of drone around 2200 rpm, but that passes very quickly. Very. Acceleration was impressive. Roy punched through the gears, and we were going seventy as quickly as the R, to my seat of the pants dyno. The suspension is taught, but supple, never harsh. I was very aware of being in a machine, all the parts directly connected. Roy turned the car over to me, and I drove as I drive my R, comparatively sedately. The downshifts were as clean, the clutch engaging at the point I am used to, though it's not as soft. There was no torque steer whatsoever. Steering was precise, not nervous, but more sensitive than the R. It pulls well in fifth, with plenty of grunt at the lower end, and more linear acceleration than I am used to. I could find nothing to object to. The BBS wheels are like new, though I like the stock wheels well enough myself. This is just a singularly beautiful, one of a kind car, and the seller a totally stand up guy you can rest assured is an honest broker. Before we left we were shown his wife's cars: an M3 only recently registered because it was used solely for racing, and her Honda 2000S. My kids had a blast for the two hours we visited. It's nimble, balanced, and can carve a turn very well. We took one hard right at speed, and there wasn't any heaviness in the nose. I would be every bit as entertained driving it as I am the R on the rural roads where I live. The latter really shines on the highway when going eighty and over, something I almost never have a chance to do. Roy had raised the car a bit when he changed to the stock wheels, which better suits the B roads in our locale. This car would be a blast on a track. Just wondering.\n\nRegarding this model in general, I was surprised to read this at CarGurus: \"The base GTI was equipped with a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the GTI VR6 upped the ante with a 2.8-liter double-overhead-cam V6 engine that pumped out 172 horsepower.\" I just bought a 1999 Volvo S70 T5 that came from the factory with 236 horsepower from a 2.3 liter 5-cylinder turbo. The \"R\" version of the S70 had something like 249 horsepower. I am surprised that the 1998 Golf GTI VR6 in stock configuration put out so much less horsepower. I thought the GTI was usually the top of the heap for small cars. My Volvo was offered in sedan and wagon variants, but not hatchback (although in my sedan the back seats fold down and the front passenger seat folds forward to be flat).\n\nAll different cars, but surprising comparison.\n\nThis particular car is a beauty, but it may have been customized to the extent that it appeals to a smaller subset of buyers than an uncustomized car.
