You tossed it aside when you filled up, because the gas cap lived beneath it. So the casual foot-in-the-door position, besides being bitchin' way cool, helped keep me in place. All of them have the Z1 key/pushbuttone/switch to pop the doors. \r\nE30 325IX connection: Engine and gearbox are used from this car other than a dedicated Oilpan... the torque tube attaches to the spot on the gearbox that a transfer case would otherwise attach to. I believe the first BMW with projector headlights, red needle for tach that isn't an M car, and of course an airfoil for a factory muffler that creates downforce with air passing over and under, and exiting above the rear bumper.... this car was designed with a wind tunnel. While the M20 motor provides only modest power, they are way high on fun factor! Top down, doors down, 4000 rpm on the tach, aftermarket exhaust bellowing, the blend of wind/engine/exhaust noise is like nothing else before or since!\r\n\r\nThe mid-front engine design and revolutionary monocoque body gives the car a perfect 50/50 weight balance and makes it arguably the best handling convertible of its day. With a suspension refresh, it could still compete today with more modern cars on an autocross course due to the perfect balance.\r\n\r\nI\u2019ve had my black car since 2008 when it was my weekend driver in the UK. Bought it with 22k miles (real mph odo/speedo!) and it now has just over 30k. Won a few local car show events with it in the early 10\u2019s in AZ. I can attest that the plastic panels do expand under intense heat. I was stranded at least twice trying to close the hood while waiting for the fenders to cool after sitting in the sun all day!\r\n\r\nSadly, neither H&R nor Eibach still make their lowering springs for this car. As several here have mentioned, the Z1 was the prototype for what is known today as the modern Z-axle suspension that found its way into E36, E31 and many other BMWs since. The last 1200 or so Z1\u2019s actually shared rear suspension parts with the early E36 cars, but the 88, 89, and 90 cars have unique rear springs that have a GIANT diameter spring perch. No other BMW before or since, has a perch that size and as a result, there are no aftermarket lowering springs that will fit the Z1 in the rear. \r\n\r\nMy almost 120k km red car has a one-off custom coil over suspension that was built specially for the car. It consists of E30 front coilover, and a Koni circle track racing shock (I.e. both rebound and compression adjustable) mounted UPSIDE DOWN in the rear with a custom bracket that mounts to the underside of the trunk so that it does not interfere with stowage of the top when folded. Linear rate Eibach racing springs mount directly to the shocks and provide full adjustability of ride height. I drove the car all over France, Belgium, and the Netherlands before shipping it to the US in 2015. It participated in the parade laps at Laguna Seca and shared space on the lawn with an Alpina RLE Z1 and Carl Nelson\u2019s Z1 at Legends in Monterey in 2016. It has been a conversation piece at many a C&C event ever since from OC to Huntington Beach to Malibu and was accepted to be in the One-of-a-Kind show at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena last year where it rubbed elbows with Chip Foose and some protog\u00e9s of Harm Lagaay, the designer of the Z1.\r\n\r\nThis particular auction example should never be modified and rarely driven. This thing is a museum piece that should command well in excess of $100k. Three cars like this with extremely low miles sold in 2016 at the high end auction houses for $100k+.
