It would be relatively uncomplicated to drop in the turbo Diesel from an 81-85 (OM617.952) and the four speed automatic (722.4)... although that wouldn't really help a great deal. The OM617 with a turbo really didn't get interesting until about 35 mph. To really perk this up, without computer worries, would be to put an OM602 and the 722.4 in it... again, would be a relatively uncomplicated improvement. But that would seem to just not be ideal for this car, it should likely be preserved as is.
